Wisdom tooth out under G.A

What was your experience like with thus? Apparently it is an easy tooth that 'will just flick out' (I'm sceptical having heard some awful stories!) But what's the hospital experience like, if you've had this? What will the recovery period be like?

Thank you.

I had one out under local. Do they offer general more often nowadays? Mine was 20 years ago

Purplturpl · 29/08/2024 07:20

Mine took a huge amount of time and pulling. Initially I could still feel pain and they put more anesthetic in, then I was fine. Recover I remember being gone. Just a bit awkward eating on that side

*fine not gone (autocorrect)

Why are you having GA if it will just flick out? It isn't usual these days.

Anyway, I had all four of mine under GA as they were very impacted and it wasn't a pleasant experience. Lots of bruising and pain afterwards.

I had 2 out under GA (quite some time ago now)
all straight forward and was out of hospital the same day but it was quite unpleasant afterwards.
mouth very uncomfortable for a while and eating was tricky.
But all healed well and was fine after a few days.

I had two out both under local. The impacted one was removed at the hospital as it needed stitching. The other one was done by the dentist, both fine. A little sore after but nothing bad

Theraffarian · 29/08/2024 07:30

Agree it seems odd to have done under general unless there is an issue. However I had all four of mine done at the same time at a specialist dentist under GA . No issues at all , and was in France the day after as had a trip already booked . Just a little care needed while eating .

I had 2 impacted wisdom teeth out under GA. The recovery in hospital was very quick and I was allowed home as soon as fully awake.

After, my face was swollen and I looked like a hamster. I had big bruises on my jaw, cheeks and neck. I had to rinse gently with saltwater for a few days to prevent dry socket but it was all fine and 3 days later I managed a small Christmas dinner (chewing very carefully!)

If it is an easy to remove tooth then you probably won't have all the bruises, will just have to be careful of developing dry socket.

The GA made me feel very unwell and out of it for a day or so though - I had the next one out under local just to avoid the GA (wasn't an option for the first 2).

I had all four impacted wisdom teeth out under GA.

One overnight stay in hospital.

I remember the pain afterwards being awful and not being able to really open my mouth. Took about a week for the swelling and pain to die down.

As PP have said, why GA if it’s anticipated removal will be so easy? GA should neither be offered - nor accepted - lightly.

My only wisdom tooth (of the three I have) to try to appear had to be removed under GA in hospital as it was impacted with the roots curved round a nerve. It had to be smashed into bits to remove it; & I’m very lucky that the unavoidable nerve damage was temporary. Admittedly i have complex health needs, but I’d to be in hospital several days afterwards.

A nice easy extraction should be local anaesthetic +/- sedation, surely?

Chillimuma · 29/08/2024 22:07

I had 2 out under local. Wouldn’t want GA unless there’s a serious need.

have had GA for a couple of other operations and it’s fairly serious

ForGreyKoala · 29/08/2024 22:54

I also don't understand why it is being removed under GA if it is "an easy tooth that 'will just flick out' "

Greybeardy · 29/08/2024 23:02

There are all sorts of reasons people have procedures done under GA that others might have under local. Wisdom teeth removal is generally pretty straightforward on the day but can be sore & swollen afterwards - maybe not such an issue if they think it’s an easy tooth though.

Thank you so much all.

I had the consultation yesterday morning and they've decided not to do it now! Which did somewhat annoy me! Not the fact they've decided not to do it per se but that they dragged me in for a 9 am appointment (so battling through traffic, getting up early) on my day off, for what could've been a telephone call. So I'll have to have it under local at my dentist. Not too chuffed with that idea if I am honest!

That really is irksome. Hopefully as removal looks easy getting it done under local will be super-simple - you can always check if your dentist offers sedation?
