Fishy wee

LO not me! DD is 16 months and for the past week her wee has smelt very strongly and a bit fishy. She wears cloth nappies which are collected & laundered but the nappy bin this week utterly reeks. She doesnt appear to be uncomfortable or itchy and there is no sign of any discharge & her bits dont smell either. I think she had a tummy bug last week as we had a few days of really revolting sticky poo pants but not diarrhoea. I wonder if this has caused an infection. She has also been drinking lots of water. Should I take her to the GP?

Have a word with the practice nurse first. Take a urine sample in and ask for it to be dipped and send for culture. That would tell you whether your dd has any infection or glucose/protein in her urine.

If she become unwell, then take her straight to the GP.

Thanks am going to ring in the morning but I start work & she starts nursery before practice opens but you rarely get to see them same day. Also - how do you get a urine sample from a 16 mo?

You have to be resourceful in getting wee out of a baby.

If she will perform in a potty, great! If not, you can either get special adhesive wee bags from the doctor or wipe her down well after a change, put some cling film across the base of her nappy and cotton wool on top. Give her a drink and check 30-60 minutes later. Squeeze the wee out of the cotton-wool with clean hands into a sterile container. If she does a poo, then I'm afraid you have to do it again!

Not at potty stage yet. Guess I better dig out the clingfilm. ta.

Thanks. All sorted. The clingfilm trick worked. The receptionists at the GP were well impressed and are going to offer it as advice to other mums when needing to collect baby urine sample.

Well done- just shows that you learn all sorts of nonsense in the course of medical training!

I hope everything goes ok... let us know the results, it's a good sign your little one has no discomfort though!

Yep. Has infection & on antibiotics tho smell had already gone. Another wee sample after course then a follow up appointment. Meds twice a day is causing her more pain than the infection i think
