Torn calf muscle?

spikeandbuffy24 · 28/08/2024 23:59

Having an absolute week of it
Playing sport tonight, my calf went pop and immediately cramped severely. I tried to walk on it and couldn't without pain/cramping

Managed to get home, it's a little swollen, I can hobble very oddly but can't stretch my heel down without pain and can't fully weight bear on it

Rest and ice or GP or a&e? We don't have a minor injuries. I have iced it already and taken naproxen

I'd say A&E. it's an accident. You'll need scans and your GP can't do that.

spikeandbuffy24 · 29/08/2024 00:54

Ugh, thought it might be
Will see how it is in the morning as I have a dentist appointment at lunchtime for my toothache. The calf pain is a nice distraction from that

TBH I did mine about 18mths ago. I went to A&E who confirmed what I'd done, gave me crutches, told me to rest it and sent me on my way.
Waste of time to be honest.

If you can afford to I'd see if you can get a physio appointment. More useful and less wasted time loitering around in A&E

I really wish I had some crutches! Walking is definitely interesting, I'm ok if I drag my foot

Argos sell crutches and they aren't expensive if you can get them same day delivered to your area or someone could pick them up for you. It's quite handy to have a pair at home.

You can buy crutches from Amazon. I also really recommend getting a physio appointment asap.

I had a nasty calf pain, and thought I’d just rest it- ended up tearing to 3rd degree which needed months of physio and was absolutely awful.
whatever you do, don’t put a hot water bottle on it- I thought it would be soothing, but it made everything so much worse.

If you have direct access to a physio then that is where I would be referring you from ED/Minor Injuries.
we do not routinely refer isolated calf injuries for any type of scan because it doesn’t change the management.
The only time “scans” are considered by us if it’s more likely a blood clot (not generally preceded by an injury or a knee injury which we think a structure is ruptured .
ice is your best friend and try some over the counter pain relief/anti inflammatory that you can tolerate.

That happened to both my legs at different times when playing sport. No point in going to A & E. you will probably get a bruise come out on your foot where the blood runs to. It heals quite quickly but what you will find is that you can't wear flat shoes for a while, you need something with a heel or a wedge as you can't fully extend your leg. It will feel very tender for a few days.

You may have a partially ruptured Achilles tendon. I would go to A and E as you might need a special boot/ splint .

How would I find that out? I've taken naproxen and have been icing it

I've rung my doctors who said "ouch", helpfully told me yes I can self refer for physio
However my foot is a bit numb, feels weird (it's hard to tell as I have cauda equina damage in the same foot) and it feels like when your foot is really cold
My dad is taking me to a hospital near him as it's smaller, quieter and has a minor injuries
My local one is always rammed and is a major trauma centre

I went, they said yes it looks like it's torn. Checked my Achilles and some other stuff. On crutches and been referred to a specialist physio they have there

The parking app said I was 55 mins so I can't fault it!
