Knee pain using stairs

Hello,

I am starting to get knee pain (especially in my left knee) when going up and downstairs. I’m in London for the weekend so I’m struggling a bit at tube stations. I’m 52. What is happening here? I feel stiff a lot more than I used to do also. Is this just an age thing? I’m 6 years post-menopausal (no HRT). I’m taking out a membership with the local leisure club once the schools have gone back so I can try and get in the treadmill and go swimming more often.

I will say that my job (last 3 years) has been office based and I’m sitting a lot more than I used to. I do need to drop a couple of dress sizes as I have put weight on too (16 now but was always a 12).

Do I need to take any supplements? I’m worried I’m going to have knee problems so early on!!

It’s probably a combination of things.

My neighbour has just done a knee pain programme with Nuffield. It’s free and she found it really helpful. You could see if there’s one near you https://www.nuffieldhealth.com/about-us/our-impact/healthy-life/joint-pain-programme?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=Paidsearch&utm_campaign=Feb23&utm_id=JointPain&gbraid=0AAAAApWqk1o-xOfeM9HyalzUglHhQrPvl&gclid=Cj0KCQjwrKu2BhDkARIsAD7GBouq2_q23gbQrnzaJ_qr8Es3vzJVKS8L9l-Z9BTUaRiK6Rd2OwupqZAaAopDEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Possibly osteoarthritis? Get some Flexiseq from Amazon. My Rheumatologist advised me to get some for osteoarthritis in the knees.

I have lost 15 kg recently and the difference it has made to my knees has surprised me. Still got more to go, but my knees are thanking me for the progress so far! I also joined a gym last year so have upped my overall fitness. I now do four pilates classes a week rather than just one and that has had a good impact too. (56 y o).

I’m like you - approaching 50, I took a more sedentary job, put on weight, did less exercise and found my knees started to ache, it got so bad I couldn’t run or cycle or kneel without pain.

I started swimming and it has made a huge difference. I now do 85 lengths three times a week, I do lots of leg drills. Recently I’ve been able to take up cycling and that is something I couldn’t have done at all previously.

I also take a vitamin D supplement, I rub magnesium gel onto my knees a few times a month and I take a primrose oil supplement too, no idea if any of these help!

im desperate to lose a few stone so that is my target before April 2025.

Following as have same problem with right knee since June. Ok walking on the flat but up and down stairs and bending forward are really sore. I have osteoarthritis in my neck and back so I suspect it’s that or the start of a tear in the cartilage . I’ve just ordered a knee brace which I’m hoping will help. Will give it a bit longer and then phone rheumatology helpline for advice (I do see a rheumatologist for arthritis). I’ve lost over 2 stone and am a healthy weight so don’t think it’s weight related. Im in my 60s and HRT and ferritin tablets. I hope you find something that eases your pain. It’s not fun.

I probably need some comfortable walking shoes too.

The right shoes would definitely help. Some with thick spongy soles to absorb impact. I can’t find any to replace the ones I had which I think isn’t helping the situation.

I have one dodgy left knee when going up & down stairs & Pilates teacher toLd me to clench my buttocks every time I went up or down. And it works!

BiscuityBoyle · 26/08/2024 20:50

I get that if I don’t do enough exercise.

My knee was hurting, I'm 55. I lost 1.5 stone, started going t9 the gym, do Pilates once a week, and upped my steps. My knees no longer hurt. I need to lose another stone. It was the weight.
