dd woke up this am saying oh dear and pointing to her tongue, she's got 3 huge ulcers on it. No other symptoms ate and drank ok. Nursery manager got my dh into a panic yesterday pick up saying she'd never seen anything like it in 30 years and 12 have picked it up since Monday etc etc. (she actually said she's never seen a child with mouth ulcers in 30 years ).

GP blew stack this morn (about nursery manager not at me). Said it was just mouth ulcers, a peadiatric virus, kids get these things, nursery mangers should realise this and so on. Said as long as she was eating and drinking no probs and to take her to nursery.

Room and nursery manger made me stand outside whilst I relayed this information and we had a bit of a debate, nursery manager saying if the staff got them they'd have to be shut down 9for mouth ulcers). i advised her to speak to infection control and community peads. Reluctantly let dd into nursery and I'm just having an early lunch break at home before finally making it into work.

Are there any paeds, Gps childrens nurses out there who know anything about this?? feel quite cross with nursery manager she practically accused me of being uncaring, it's not chickenpox, measles, stomach bug and I don't see her excluding every child with a snotty nose.

Advice and information please!

i am at your nursery manager

DS has had a fair few ulcers - usually accompanied by a runny nose or him just being a little bit under the weather

However, IIRC impetigo can sometimes show as sores etc in the mouth/on the tongue and this IS infectious

dustystar · 17/04/2008 11:36

There are various things that can cause mouth ulcers which are contagious but if your GP examined your child i would hope they could have ruled these out.

tiredlady · 17/04/2008 11:38

It could be hand foot and mouth. This is caused by the coxsackie A virus and children get peeling skin on the soles of their feet, palms of their hands as well as mouth ulcers. Nothing to worry about at all

peacelily · 17/04/2008 11:39

Wasn't aware impetigo could show up on the tongue and know how infectious it is, thanks for the info.

GPs certain it's just alphegous (sp?) ulcers which i've heard of before. From what I can gather mouth ulcers in los are fairly common not unheard of.

TBH I'm so cross I'm considering looking into alternative childcare. The main thing that stops me is dd is so happy there and she's got her little mates knows her routine and in many ways they're v good. Very anxious, uncontained response though and according to GP has got a lot of parents panicking

What other contagious things can cause mouth ulcers dustystar? I have to say as soon as I said "nursery manager" the GP when off on one and didn't ask me any questions!

Hand, foot and mouth is contagious and also Gingivostomatitis. Aphthous Stomatitis (which is what i think the GP meant she thought they were) is not contagious.

RubySlippers · 17/04/2008 11:45

regular ulcers aren;'t infectious are they?

herpes virus can cause ulcers and some other infections

orangehead · 17/04/2008 11:45

I was thinking poss hand foot and mouth too, but they usually have either sores or rash on hands and feet or sometimes limbs. The gp didnt diagnose my kids with but said they had a virus, it was the health visitor that picked up

CarGirl · 17/04/2008 11:45

Could it be herpes, the initial outbreak is very commonly an outbreak of nasty mouth ulcers inside the mouth with non of the coldsores on the outside?

dustystar · 17/04/2008 11:46

Mouth ulcers are quite common though and I am surprised that the nursery manager claims not to have seen any for years. I do understand why she would be worried by a sudden apparent outbreak of them though. Usually they are not contagious so you wouldn't expect loads of children to suddenly get them.

CarGirl · 17/04/2008 11:49

I also thought hand foot and mouth a possibility

ZoeC · 17/04/2008 11:50

I thought oral herpes too - dd1 got this and it was sores/ulcers in her mouth NOT a coldsore, although I believe she is likely to get coldsores in the future. It is catching, but they don't advise quarantining for it on the public health site I checked at the time as it's so common a virus.

peacelily · 17/04/2008 11:56

from my web searching it looks like it may be herpes which apparently is v common in children of this age. Can understand nursery managers concerns about the infection risk it 's the way she's dealing with it. seeing as about 805 of the population are asymptomatic carriers of HPV 1 is seems unlikely that quarantining them would do any good.

GP is adamant it's not though. Bit stuck really. If it Is herpes then it's unfortunate but unless their sever people don't usually have time off for cold sores and as so many people have them containing it isn't feasible.

You may get a better diagnosis from a dentist than a gp tbh they are trained to spot tongue cancers etc etc

aplogies for my apalling grammar and spelling on last post
