My 3 year old gets "LEG ACHE" - Anyone else's get this?

every now and again my Lo complains his legs are aching usually after pre-school and around once a month. I have had to give him a dose of calpol last night and tonight.

I suffered from this when I was young but not this young...should I go to the Docs?

I used to get this, think it was cramp

Mum1369 · 16/04/2008 22:00

My DS1 gets it after a lot of exercise (he's 2.8) My DH & I both remember getting it, my Mum used to call it growing pains.. I think it is just having stretched your muscles. We always dose up with Calpol before bed after a particularly hectic day.

castille · 16/04/2008 22:01

Both my DDs started getting get pains in their lower legs and/or feet at about 3 years, which are, apparently, growing pains. They come and go, nearly always strike in the evening, and a dose of Calpol usually does the trick.

If you're worried though, ask your doc.

BugBearisBugBear · 16/04/2008 22:01

Yes! My DD does this, it really pisses me off. I put it down to attention seeking. Maybe it's growing pains?

Lubyloo · 16/04/2008 22:04

My sister and I used to suffer with this when we were little. It was very painful but I think it was just growing pains. It always happened at night.

My 3.1 year old has also been complaining of pains in his legs, which I put down to growing pains.

I never thought of giving him calpol though - I might next time he compains

MrsCurly · 16/04/2008 22:07

My four year old gets this in her legs too. I thought it was cramp, which I got a lot as a child and still do from time to time, but her nursery teacher called it growing pains.

somersetmum · 16/04/2008 22:08

It is not attention seeking, it is genuine pain, otherwise how come so many of our children suffer from it?

Calpol, as already said, will do the trick if its very severe, but I've found that a cuddle and rubbing the legs through pyjamas to warm them up is just as effective.

jingleyjen · 16/04/2008 22:09

My four year old seems to get this alot at the moment, have had it in the back of my mind to take him with me when we go to the next baby clinic with DS2 and ask the HV about it..
I had assumed it was growing pains..

liath · 16/04/2008 22:09

3 year old dd sometimes wakes in the night with a sore leg. I give her calpol, it usually does the trick. It seems to come in bouts - a few days every couple of months.

pinkyminky · 16/04/2008 22:12

My dh had it- he'd say "my little leggies don't want to work any more". It was diagnosed as growing pains - his parents took him to the doctors.

swiftyknickers · 16/04/2008 22:12

god i used to get horrific growing pains-my dad used to sit for hours night after night rubbing my achey legs-bless

reckon calpol and a good rub will sort him out

Mum1369 · 16/04/2008 22:12

I agree somerset - sometimes rubbing or squeezing the offending limb does the trick too (however, I usually do this while DH runs for the calpol..)

lisad123 · 16/04/2008 22:14

My 5 year old stil gets this and often in the night screaming and crying

BugBearisBugBear · 16/04/2008 22:15

Feel like a right cow now, my poor DD! I've just been tutting at her.

TheMadHouse · 16/04/2008 22:17

Bear me too. Oh I am such a hard mum

pinkyminky · 16/04/2008 22:18

Also I used to get bad cramp, definitely cramp- not bad aches, so different, I think?

BugBearisBugBear · 16/04/2008 22:19

DD1 will be pleased if the leg ache means I crack out the Pink Medicine. She's got quite a taste for it.

And DD2 signs 'milk' and 'more' at the Calprofen bottle.

TheMadHouse · 16/04/2008 22:42

I am sure they must add something, DS2s first words were calpol

forkhandles · 16/04/2008 22:52

my friends DS used to complain of achey legs and knees on and off, and it turned out he needed inserts in his shoes to support his arches as they were flatter than should be.

zazen · 16/04/2008 23:38

These are so called growing pains?
I used to get them and went to a Clinical Dietitian.
They are caused by a MAGNESIUM deficiency.

a multi MINERAL and vitamin B complex supplement will do the trick.

Pumpkin seeds are loaded with magnesium, so make sure he has a handful for a snack every day, with a banana (for potassium). Broccoli and any dark coloured leafy veg, are also loaded with magnesuim and mangenese.

He could also try salad seed mix: sunflower seeds with pumpkin and linseeds sprinkled over his salad, a few times a week: my 3yo DD loves them over her cos lettuce salad.
Sometimes she eats more healthily than me!

I hope you get some relief for him soon - it will take about a month of supplementation of his diet a multimineral and vitamin before there is some relief.

I'd go easy on the calpol - paracetamol is very toxic to tiny livers.

AnyFuleKno · 16/04/2008 23:43

Another sufferer here! I still get these...under my kneecaps in particular and have found a heat pad or hot water bottle very effective.

pinkyminky · 16/04/2008 23:52

Sounds like it could be one of many different things.
Pumpkin seeds are really nice on roasted vegetables.

milge · 17/04/2008 00:04

DS gets these and finds elevating legs on a firmish pillow helps, along with lots of rubs always at 2 or 3 am !
