How can I quell this nausea?

I have suffered with IBS and functional dyspepsia for decades. However, since I started suffering from perimenopausal symptoms the gut issues, especially the nausea is awful.

I can go days, even a week without any nausea then will suffer for days and days. I keep a food diary and watch what I eat avoiding any known triggers but can’t find a cause. I only drink water, anything else feels as though it sets off my acid stomach.

I have had cameras up and down, scans on my gallbladder/stomach/liver etc and a bile acid malabsorption scan, thankfully all clear.

I just can not work out if this is an indigestion type issue or a hormonal one or if the upset hormones are in turn upsetting my digestive system?

I have tried tweaking my diet, avoiding fried and fatty foods, no fizzy drinks, artificial sweeteners or alcohol. I avoid dairy and anything which could make me feel sicky but the feeling just comes on like that and nothing seems to help. This morning I was fine then suddenly felt queasy around 2pm and still feel so very 🤢

I am sitting here with travel sickness bands on my wrists which occasionally help but not much. I drink ginger tea, take gaviscon etc but it’s not helping.

I am fed up to the back teeth with it, makes the whole of my digestive system feel very unsettled. Any advice what could be causing it or how to quell it? My gastroenterologist isn’t particularly helpful.

I find eating little and often works for me. If I leave eating for too long it can trigger nausea. Keep a snack handy. Doesn't have to be much. Handful of nuts, piece of fruit, biscuit.

I can't help wondering whether the nausea is being caused by something to do with your ears.

I dont have ibs (i think) but i get the hormone nausea all the time and at the worst I find the opposite works for me, actually eating fatty and huge dinner sorts this feeling and 7up but i dont like fizzy drinks to begin with...dont know why... its like morning nausea horrible feeling ...so make sure youre not hungry aswell cause that might make u feel nauseous too... god knows... try what pregnant women do.. lemons and ginger and crackers and sour and....yea try one time fatty food (at your own risk 👀)

I have this too and am having success with a low dose of amitriptyline (10mg). I started taking it for another reason but it's improved my nausea more than anything else.

I only drink water with the occasional mint tea. I do find it soothing but it seems to make my indigestion worse, think it relaxes the sphincter or something?

invisible cat I do have tinnitus, not sure if that's connected?

somerandomgirl Might have to give that a go? When I had morning sickness I used to carry a grapefruit around with me, piercing the skin with my fingernails released the oils and then I'd sniff it and feel better, maybe I'd better stock up on grapefruit?

That's good to know as I have recently been given a prescription for Nortriptyline for my IBS, if it can tackle the nausea too that will be a bonus.

If nothing else works might aswell try .. hope it gets resolved...

Menopause really made me feel really nauseous. I went on a low dose HRT in December and felt awful since then. Had a review with a specialist, and they have increased my dose which seems to be working.
Might be worth seeing if that would help because when I looked into it the changing hormone levels is like during pregnancy but can take years to settle down and I couldn't face that.

I have been through stages of this. The worst bout lasted 6 months, the only thing I found at the time that helped was eating little bits every hour or so. Looking back I do wonder if it was chronic constipation causing it. Do you have any issues with that side of things?

Has Coeliac disease been ruled out? You have some of the symptoms and it can be misdiagnosed as IBS for many years. On average it’s 13 years from onset of Coeliac symptoms until people get a correct diagnosis. 1 in 100 people have Coeliac disease but only 30% of them are diagnosed - without a GF diet many undiagnosed Coeliacs will develop bowel cancer. It’s important to get tested for it if you have IBS.

I have endometriosis and adenomyosis, I have tried hrt but sadly it made my endo pain much worse.

I am IBS-mixed but mainly IBS-d, I find myself suffering from constipation a few times a month but haven't noticed it being worse during those times.

I have been tested for Coeliac disease a few times. Firstly via bloods tests and then via biopsies when I had a gastroscope in 2019. They have always come back as negative and I was eating lots of gluten at the time so hopefully they weren't false negatives.
