DH Has Pneumonia. Is this normal? Scared!

Frazzledmummy123 · 18/08/2024 13:32

3 weeks ago, my dh got a stabbing pain in his ribs which he and his gp thought was a pulled muscle and he was taking painkillers every 4 hours. A week later, he started to feel flu-like symptoms with it and he saw a doctor who told him it was muscular.

Last week, he developed a bad cough and fever and at a&e was diagnosed with bacterial pneumonia. He was given 2 double dose anti biotics to take for a fortnight and cocodamol for pain relief. He also had a CAT scan which showed a lot of fluid in lungs, hwnce the 2nd lot of anti biotics.

He has been at home and pain relief seems to have been doing the job. However, this morning he has been in more pain but he says the pain has moved further upwards, and is very nauseous. He has had an appetite until now and not has nausea before.

Is this worrying that it appears worse, or is it a good sign the pain is moving upwards? His blood pressure is normal.

I am scared for him and dont know if this is normal or not? We expected pain, but not when was better yesterday.

How's he getting on @Frazzledmummy123 ?

He is still in hospital and feeling very poorly. He has a partial collapsed lung too so we are so glad he went in when he did.

Oh no. It's good that he's in where they can keep a close eye on him xxx look after yourself

Ineffable23 · 20/08/2024 22:33

At least he's in the right place. How horrid for both of you; you must be so glad he went in!

coxesorangepippin · 22/08/2024 02:27

Gosh good job you went

Hope he's feeling better soon

Nat6999 · 22/08/2024 03:01

I had pneumonia last winter & it took me a good 4 months for the sore ribs & creaking lungs to go. The antibiotics could be causing the nausea, he needs to take them with food, especially if he has had doxycycline. Hope he feels better soon.

You did the right thing taking him to A&E. Hope he recovers quickly and you can cope financially Flowers

Thank goodness he went, he's in the right place. My H had very severe pneumonia too, he actually ended up in intensive care,it was a long road back to recovery, months. It was the middle of winter though, cold and lots of bugs coming home from nursery which didn't help recovery. Fingers crossed for your husband

I'm glad he has gone back in and they're taking care of him!
I've had pneumonia twice and it isn't pleasant at all, one time lead to sepsis!
My son was born with pneumonia and a collapsed lung so you have my full sympathy! He's now 8 and thriving, though did struggle for a couple of years with chest infections and catching all sorts as his immune system built up/back up.
He's in the best place and hopefully will feel better as treatment goes on! Lots of rest x

I am glad he is being treated in hospital. I had pneumonia earlier this year and although I am relatively young (50s) and very fit I was in for nearly a fortnight with a couple of days in critical care.

Be warned that recovery is very slow and he will likely get tired very easily for quite a while after he comes out. It was a good 6 weeks before I felt vaguely normal. I am now around 4 months of recovery and my lung function is dreadful still. Fine for day to day stuff but I get breathless very quickly from minimal exertion. It's very frustrating, actually.

Wishing you both all the best.

I was very similar, my GP knew pneumonia but also suspected sepsis. Told my DH to rush me to nearest hospital and show them the note she scribbled. Said not to stop at red lights (never mind passing by our house which was en route).

I was straight to ICU, drips, tubes and oxygen. Multiple IRMs and other scans... long hospital stay... Then lung drainings and physiotherapy.

Just to say I am late fifties and otherwise fit. This knocked me for six and I'll spare you the details but looking back it was six months to full recovery. Also I got so thin my hair began to fall out (grown back now though).

What is interesting to me is the rising number of cases in even the very young. The daughter of one of my friends was all lined up to represent France in the Olympics in fencing... she got pneumonia a year ago and had to be replaced. So why all these cases recently ?

Sorry to hear this!
I do hear for of it now also, but not sure why..
I also feel that there isn't enough out there in regards to knowing the symptoms and what to look out for with pneumonia and sepsis.

How’s your dh @Frazzledmummy123 ?

BirdsRoundandRound · 26/08/2024 14:23

Also checking in @Frazzledmummy123, been thinking about you both

Frazzledmummy123 · 27/08/2024 20:09

@WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout @BirdsRoundandRound Sorry, just saw your posts.

He is still in hospital, day 8 since admission. He has been making slow progress but iv anti biotics seem to finally be working 🙏. He had a scan yesterday which showed an improvement, but there was talk of a biopsy which has worried me sick! Apart from the worry aboutnthe biopsy, he seems to be recovering although understand it will be a slow process.

Fucking hell, your poor husband. What an ordeal, and it's so scary how things can turn so quickly. I am so happy he is on the road to recovery. I'm sure he can't wait until he gets home.

Absolutely. It is hard to believe that his 'pulled muscle' was pneumonia. He is glad to be feeling better and hoping to be home soon.
