Worried I'm ill.

Hello

I have had a pain in my groin for 6 months. This now goes round to my buttock and feels like it's 'in the bone'. Sometimes it's a shooting pain into my groin on my right hand side, other times it's a dull ache. Sometimes it's not there at all. I've seen a GP. They said sprained muscle. See a physio. I've seen a physio and they couldn't really find any issue. I've had a pelvic ultrasound to rule out gynae issues and all clear apart from mild adenomyosis.

Meanwhile I'm still in pain. I feel like my GP isn't really interested. Since then I've started checking my poo and feel like I'm looser than normal but still only once a day. No other symptoms. But a friend, who is 36 (I am 38) has been diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer. Everything is playing on my mind and I'm terrified I'm ill.

Should I keep persisting with my GP. Should I ask for an xray of my pelvis not just ultrasound?

Any advice or similar experiences I'd be grateful.

Adenomyosis can be very painful

But if you are worried, definitely go back.

blessedarethequichemakers · 17/08/2024 10:59

Was it a pelvic health physio? They are much more knowledgeable about this kind of thing.

DelilahBucket · 17/08/2024 11:06

If you can afford it I'd go to a private physio. Even if it's just one appointment. I don't find NHS physics have the time to actually help their patients.
Do you do any kind of exercise normally that keep your muscles strong?

itsgettingweird · 17/08/2024 11:08

Adenomyosis is painful.

But other than that have you also had your hip looked at? That's can cause pain around that area too.

AtrociousCircumstance · 17/08/2024 11:08

have you had an x ray? Could be hip arthritis?

Droolylabradors · 17/08/2024 11:18

Sounds like you need to see a female pelvic health physio.

You could be gripping already tight pelvic floor muscles as a reaction to the adenonyosis.

Eyesopenwideawake · 17/08/2024 11:29

Obviously all and any physical issues need to be investigated but this Everything is playing on my mind and I'm terrified I'm ill jumped out at me.

When someone close to us is affected by a serious or unexpected illness it can have the effect of making us examine our own health and maybe focus on things we wouldn't normally concern us and in far more detail. That focusing in itself can make us anxious about our own health and/or mortality and thus the anxiety cycle begins. Hence a perfectly normal digestive routine has become something potentially sinister. Does this make sense OP?

(As an aside, the pain sounds a bit like sciatica!)

Chewbecca · 17/08/2024 11:30

Groin pain was my first symptom of arthritis in my hip.

Lollyl88 · 17/08/2024 12:08

Thank you all. I appreciate the replies. I will look into a specific pelvic health physio. I hadn't realised such things exist :)

The one I saw recently was amazing and helped me so much. Good luck!

You also need to get your hip checked.

3 of us on here have all said that was first symptom experienced.

I know others have had the same.

I've also had adenomyosis (but mine was severe) and having a hysterectomy didn't sure the pain - because it's caused by my hip!

Lollyl88 · 17/08/2024 13:16

@itsgettingweird Thank you. I will get my hip checked too. I'm assuming a pelvic physio will also be able to advise on this? Or do I need to go back to GP?

You need to go to the GP and request an x ray for your hip.

garlictwist · 30/10/2024 14:55

@Lollyl88 Did you get to the bottom of this?

Lollyl88 · 30/10/2024 15:02

@garlictwist to be honest, no I didn't! Still seeing a physio who can't work it out. Had a hip xray and all clear. GP not really interested. I'm convinced I'm perimenopausal as I have some other symptoms. I keep getting pins and needles in hands and feet at certain times in my cycle so waiting for further testing on that. Struggling to convince my GP all is hormone related. Meanwhile waiting for a Mirena coil for progesterone and I'm hoping neurology may say that pins and needles is hormonal which might help my fight with needing HRT/ this being the root of the problem. All very irritating as GP says I'm too young but im fairly sure this might be the problem!

Are you experiencing a similar pain?

DrMadelineMaxwell · 30/10/2024 15:25

Long - sorry - but so was the process I went through!

I'd also recommend getting your hip checked. And if it's clear (they look for arthritis) and physio isn't helping, push for a referral to orthopaedics.

My issue is groin pain on the right, which sometimes goes round to the back. I was originally fobbed off as 'fine' by the gp and then also by the hosp after an x ray. Self referred to physio. No improvement and referred to a random clinic in the hosp who said 'bursitis' and referred for more physio.

Only when the physio bloke drew a blank as why it wasn't helping referred me to ortho and I waited to see them, I got an answer. The consultant pointed at my (then 3 year old) xray and said the bone was clearly not the right shape and was locking causing joint pain. He was unimpressed! It had been completely missed when the general xray technician looked for arthritis. I had a follow up steroid injection and CAT scan then I had an op and this fixed it for a good while.

Ten years on, I've had a recent flare up of the same groin pain. Tried physio again, through occ health. She asked for xray and a referral to orthopaedics again straight away this time. Xray again checked just for arthritis and nothing else was said to the gp. Again, when referred to orthopaedics on request from the physio lady, they can see the bone that was removed in the op has regrown and the top of the leg joint is again not the right shape and is likely to need a revision of the original op. I'll have an MRI to check on the state of the joint and another steroid injection as it's part of the diagnosis process.

garlictwist · 30/10/2024 16:16

@Lollyl88 yes, I have similar pain. I think it's a hip labral tear. An MRI showed degeneration of the labrum. Might be worth you getting that checked out as a possibility? I too have been fobbed off by so many physios and doctors. The truth is the hip is a very complex area to image and you need a specialist to do it.

@DrMadelineMaxwell do you have hip impingement? Did you also have a repair to your labrum in the surgery?

DrMadelineMaxwell · 30/10/2024 17:14

I did have and do again have impingement. No mention of repair on initial surgery but they did reshape both he femoral head and the hip socket last time.

Lollyl88 · 30/10/2024 17:50

@garlictwist and @DrMadelineMaxwell That's really interesting information - thank you. Do you also have limiting hip movement? And is your pain constant or intermittent? I don't have pain all the time and my hip has full rotation etc. so all very frustrating. The pain is also not constant. It's not confined to movement or to inactivity. It doesn't affect my sleep. It's just so odd!
