LPR - laryngopharyngeal reflux getting me down :(

Hey all! So I'm suffering with horrid LPR symptoms..coughing loads, hoarse voice & struggling to speak full sentences without coughing fit. Plus awful indigestion.

For context I didn't really suffer with heartburn until I caught covid the first time quite bad. After recovering I immediately noticed continuing cough, lots of mucus (post nasal drip) and hoarse voice. I thought this was aftermath of just having pneumonia from covid and it wasn't getting better. ENT stuck camera down my throat and saw my vocal chords were inflamed due to acid. Prescribed PPI, it went away and no longer needed PPI.

Soon after I got pregnant, left with crazy heartburn symptoms in final trimester which didn't go away. Had an endoscopy - found a 4cm hiatus hernia for which I take PPI.

Just caught covid second time and now I've started with the horrible LPR symptoms. I'm thinking it's related to having covid as its happened again now :( I'm due to have an oesophageal manometry test to see if my hernia can be repaired but I'm so confused on if this LPR is caused from my hernia or not.

Has anyone lost weight with a hiatus hernia and recovered?

Has anyone here had LPR after covid?

And does anyone have any recipe ideas to heal my reflux? Currently reading Jonathon Aviv but struggling to see how I can implement these recipes with a busy working life and a 1 year old

Tia x

That's spooky I just came across your post, as I don't come on here often these days and only popped on 10 mins ago.

Yes I did get LPR after covid, although I put it down to overdosing on hot pepper sauce due to losing my taste. I'll never eat chilli again that's for sure.

Anyway a year later I'm pretty much free of any symptoms, after researching everything and resigned to saving up for some kind of surgery, I was so desperate.

I was googling yet again when Iqoro popped up, a plastic oral exercising device designed in Sweden. It's £150, although apparently in UK a few areas or practices offer it on the NHS. You do resistance exercises for 90 seconds in total split into 3 x 30 seconds a day. It strengthens over 100 muscles from palate to diaphragm. You'll know, but for others who don''t, the oesophagus sphincter opening into the stomach weakens, causing the backwash, but the whole swallowing mechanism needs strengthening. So the Iqoro tightens it all really well, or did for me. I started feeling the benefit within a month, but I suppose it was a couple of months before I thought I was really getting there, and 4 months to feel pretty much normal. I still use it 30 seconds a day at least for maintenance. So you do have to be religious about it but I'd do it for 30 minutes if it was gonna cure LPR, it's disgusting isn't it. But obvs better to keep taking any tablets till they're not needed. The plastic device shows no signs of wear after a year.

Iqoro are great on aftercare support with an advice line, FB page, lots of info on their site and a video to show how to use it. Good luck!
Oh and it's also for sleep apnea, swallowing difficulties with different conditions, etc.

Hello, so I have recently been diagnosed with silent reflux.its quite scary.
I have been told to have
Panzoprozole / gaviscon advanced after every meal 4 x per day.
I had all the symptoms etc. the Dr thought it may be throat cancer, I saw ENT and they said it's silent reflux.
I am wondering. .... How do you cope with it ? As it looks like my whole diet will need to change.
I feel this may affect my whole lifestyle, job ( telecommunications)
Etc.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Thank you
We all need to help each other

I have no advice OP, but just wanted to congratulate you on your spelling 🌟

Ryanfareham86 · 27/09/2024 10:48

Thank you, or was that sarcasm? Ha
I've done some research and it says
Drink water, herbal tea's, almond milk etc
Eat
Bananas, none acidic fruit, etc.
All this will help.

This is going to end up being my new "normal" so I need to adapt quickly.

In reference to the previous posts.
Anyway I can help, I will certainly try too.

It was genuine, I try not to do sarcasm, it's mean! I have similar problems, plus various allergies, so have to be very careful. One thing I've found difficult is that so many things have lemon juice/citric acid in them, always check because that can cause a lot of pain. Good luck, there are still plenty of nice things, and almond milk is delicious!

That's good,
Yes I have tried almond milk for the first time today, it's actually quite nice.

I have bought some herbal tea. I'll let you know once I've tried it. The verdict.
