Hole in heart

Hi all,

looking for personal experience, support and rationalism!
I took my daughter (10) to the hospital today for a heart ultrasound as the doctor picked up a heart murmur when I took her in for a persistent cough (now gone!).

I wasn’t expecting much from today, just a yes or no to the heart murmur. I wasn’t too worried because the doctor said heart murmurs are common in children due to the heart chambers being smaller, and it usually goes away as they grow. She referred us just to be on the safe side.

Well, the doctor was lovely and he was chatting away - pointing out anatomy and explaining what we could see on the screen etc.
He then went a bit quiet and started asking DD to move into certain positions. He then proceeded to take loads of videos and recordings. I was growing more anxious and started to panic as I knew something was up and my head was going to all kinds of scary places!
I asked him if everything is ok, and he just said ‘we need to talk about this’.
I try not to cry in front of my DD - who was a champ throughout all this and not worried at all!

He finishes up the scan and tells me that DD has a hole in her heart, in the wall between her two bottom chambers. He said it is small (4-5mm, i think) and that she was born with it. He was surprised it was only picked up recently. DD is active and healthy with no symptoms so we haven’t had the need for medical investigations.

He said they will need to monitor it yearly, and that it may close on its own (let’s hope so!). He said no tattoos ever, and to ensure good dental hygiene because apparently infections can be serious with VSD.
Doctor said DD can live her life as normal with no restriction on sport or exercise etc.

I am really hoping the hole closes on its own, I have read that it can’t get bigger but I’m not sure how correct that is.

Has anyone had experience of this?
I am worrying.
