I am training for the Moonwalk and went out for a 6 mile walk last night.
The minute I set off I noticed my heel was really hurting.
By the time I came back home, I felt sick with the pain, and I kept waking up in the night as it was so painful.

This morning it is still no better.
I cannot put any weight on my right heel, if I attempt it I literally see stars and feel like I am going to faint, it hurts so much.

Ever since I started training for hte moonwalk I have had pain in this heel, but never as severe as this.

Has anyone had this? How long did it take to heel up?
Dh wants to take me to a&e this afternoon (gp has no appts) but is that an over-reaction?

And most importantly, how on earth am I go ing to keep up with my training schedule? The moonwalk is in 4 weeks.

And my other question - how am I going to take the dc to school next week if I can't actually walk????

Help please, please, please, even if it is just kind soothing words.
Because I am sooooo fed up and worried about next week, and what to do...

aaarrrgggghhh

nder the heel? Or behind? Under sounds like plantar fasciitis. Very sore. Have a google for heel spur plantar fasc good luck andxrest it

hippipotami · 16/04/2008 10:15

under, plantar fachiitis is my (non medical) diagnosis too. But all the websites say that after half an hour or so of pain in the morning most people can put weight on the heel again. But I still cant

Also, none of the websites say how long roughly on average this takes to heal up....

I'd find yourself a good sports physio asap.

hippipotami · 16/04/2008 10:27

I think you may be right neo.

Hea to A+E is my advice
If you cannot weight bear it is serious enough
GP will make you wait ages for physio
A+E can sort out good painkillers an xray to rule out anything else and decent advice and maybe some crutches

Sports physio would probably cost about £30. If you went on the NHS you may have to wait months to be seen.

I had a knee problem from running. I waited at least 6 months to see NHS physio. When I finally got to see her, she said try these exercises and then "Come back and tell us if they work - we don't see much of this". It was a really, really common running injury. I suspect most NHS physios are (very appropriately) geared more towards supporting people with different kinds of difficultes (e.g. old people, people with disabilities etc) and I'm not sure how good they are with sports related injuries.

A decent sports physio might be able to get you back on your feet reasonably quickly and stop any long term problem developing. I really wish I'd gone to one a lot earlier.

Hello guys

Have just come back from our NHS walk in clinic where they diagnosed an acute case of Plantar Fasciitis.

They said the chances of me doing the Moonwalk are slim (the moonwalk is in 4 weeks), but because I am so keen to do it they have referred me to physiotherapy. So along I pop to the physio department and they give me an appointment for tomorrow

I also have 400mg anti-inflammatories to take 3 times a day.

Realistically I don't think I will make it to the moonwalk, but until I have had my first physio session I am not prepared to give up on that dream yet.

Thanks for all your advice, I love MN

Ok I'm not going to scare you (too much!) but please be careful - I had an abscess in my right heel that started out in exactly the same way, the pain was soo intense. I was told I had plantar fasciatis also but after being admitted to hospital for pain relief and when even morphine wasn't touching the pain they did an emergency MRI. I had an operation that dug a hole the size of a £2 coin down to the bone in the heel through the sole of my foot. I was in hospital for 10 days, and didn't put shoes on until September, the whole process started in June! Please keep hasseling them if it doesn't get better, I reckon if I had had the op a week earlier I would have recovered so much earlier.

OMG Hairy

Am scared now. No seriously, thanks for the advice, will keep an eye.

I have had PF before, but the pain was never like this.
So I am worried about it.

Bugger.

oh, bugger was not directed at you hairy. It was more a 'I am very pissed off I may not be able to do the moonwalk type of bugger'

sorry.

Don't worry - didn't think it was directed at me! It was the worst thing I have ever gone through, I would wake up in the night and rock with pain I hope it's not an abscess but I just thought I'd warn you to not hang around if the painkillers don't help!

hippipotami · 16/04/2008 13:17

That's what I was like last night. Sitting up in bed whimpering and feeling like I was going to pass out.

It is no fun

On a good note, dh is doing the weekly grocery shop tonight, every cloud and all that

Very pleased that you have managed to get seen so quickly and I hope they can sort your foot asap.

Best of luck with the Moonwalk.
