Stone in kidney and painkillers

A CT showed a small stone in my right kidney. Eurologist said shouldnt be painfull but am in pain sometimes when trying to sleep. Dont think its back pain and nowhere near as bad as stone and infection,,which required surgery. Paracetamol vand ibuprofen arent cutting it at night. Is a GP likely to be sympothetic?

I've got kidney stones (they've actually destroyed my kidney completely) & my GP said not to take ibuprofen. I've got 15/500 & 30/500 cocodamol

Definitely ask for something else

Im not sure where you get that from. It was what my consultant recommended for me. I've been taking it regularly for 7 years & there's been no difference in my one working one. Also a quick Google confirms its safe for kidneys.

There's no way my consultant would recommend it if it was likely to cause damage to my remaining one

I've also got tramadol & amatriptaline

I had 3 small kidney stones in May. I was given Diclofenic suppositories and omg they were amazing. Highly recommend.

Stone in kidney and painkillers

Just shows how you really can't trust Google. My search shows codeine does no harm to kidneys but to avoid ibuprofen. Another search says to take ibuprofen!!!

I guess the best thing is to absolutely ignore Google & go by what we're told by specialists.

Your doctor knows your kidney issues, mine knows mine & the advice were getting - albeit appearing contradictory is based on our personal conditions

Quite poor tho that 2 basic Google searches throw up completely different answers.

Codeine doesn’t cause kidney damage, but if your kidney function is bad enough then the codeine can cause more side effects. Same with morphine and all the other opioids. Ibuprofen/diclofenac can cause kidney problems and if renal function is really precarious they are generally not advised, but for things like simple stones with normal renal blood tests they may be just fine. The underlying kidney disease will also make a difference to what drugs are appropriate so different people with different diseases will be advised different things. There are risks and benefits to all drugs and the balance will be different for different people -that’s why it’s important to get advice from a doctor/HCP who knows what’s relevant to you and not from Google/mumsnet.

Thaniks
Agree the supositories are amazing is the GP likely to believe a small stone in the kidney could cause pain?

That's only in end stage kidney disease and the kidneys are barely functioning as codeine is converted to morphine and the metabolite is excreted by the kidney so can accumulate its totally fine until ckd3-5.

The default best pain killers for stones is diclofenac rectally (stronger version of ibuprofen)again can't have in advanced kidney disease but normally first line in combo with paracetamol

See your gp theyll def be sympathetic as kidney stones are often awfully painful and they'll know what your kidney function is and hence what it appropriate
