Is this Peri

I'm 47 and wondering if this is a peri related issue. I've never had this before other than when I was on the pill.

I started my period as expected last Saturday. On day 4 when I was expecting to stop my period it did seem to stop. Or so I thought, since then I've been spotting not enough to need a pad but I've had dark spotting. Tonight I've started feeling crampy. Is this to do with peri.
My last few cycles my periods have been heavier after being light ish for a while.

Me again!

I'm looking for supplements that help peri, does anyone take them? I've been looking at Collagen and also supplements aimed at peri but I do not know where to start!!

If anyone takes anything that actually works I'd be happy to hear.

At the moment my hair is dry and brittle and the hair loss is insane. My scalp is irritated. Since going back on the pill
I've also got a horribly spotty chin.

@threelions not so much supplements for peri but could help with sleep in regard to it. I generally don't have issues with sleep more getting up to pee a lot. Started taking vit b complex ( prev just took b12) and also magnesium bisglycinate and it's made my sleep even better. Getting up once a night for the bathroom and not til a lot later say 4ish.

On a different note is anxiety and weepiness a peri symptom. I've always had anxiety but never medically treated. Last few days I've been over the top anxious ( health orientated - parents aging/illness and husband). Been solo parenting for 5 days as husband away and had to go to a funeral yesterday so not sure if it's just a culmination of that all or peri orientated. Just feel shit and weepy, which is absolutely not like me.

@threelions

Just started taking 'Menopace'. Largely available in stores and on Amazon.

@cbar123

It is. I'm not usually weepy but I am nowadays!

I have the same anxieties as you. I can have a wobble over a newspaper article!

I've just started to take Collagen and Biotin and Evening Primrose oil supplements in the hope they help me with Peri. I think the mini pill seems to be helpful too with some of the symptoms.

I've also bought some of the Pantene range of Menopause Shampoo and conditioners - they're fab my hair is much more it's usual self now and not as dry as a bone. My scalp is also less irritated.

I'm still taking my 'Menopace'. Feeling a bit better in some ways but not others, but I am like a rollercoaster so I'll have to see how I am in a few weeks! I know it's not going to be an instant reduction in symptoms.

cbar123 · 07/11/2024 10:21

Hi, just thought I'd add some helpful info. Had a dental checkup this morning and asked if I should be aware of any mouth changes as suspect I may be going into peri. The good news is the dentist was pleased I asked and said peri can cause inflammation and bleeding of gums plus in rare cases your tongue can feel tingly and a burning sensation. She said many woman don't tell them until later as they don't realise it's related. My gums went mad in pregnancy so seems given peri is all hormones what the dentist said makes sense and she also said it's evidence based.

Anyway I thought it would be helpful to add here and unfort yet another thing to add to a list of ailments!

JustLaura · 11/11/2024 00:11

How is everyone?

cbar123 · 11/11/2024 07:16

Not bad, cycle was only 23 days this month after 30 last month so we'll see going forward what happens. Nowt much else to report.

threelions · 11/11/2024 15:31

I'm not bad either. AF is due in 3 days but whether it shows or not is another thing. The mini pill may well stop it.

Still seeing improvement with the Menopace though I'm in the midst of my insomnia phase of my cycle. Insomnia hasn't really improved any at this point but I do feel in a better mood and have more energy since starting the Menopace supplements.

JustLaura · 13/11/2024 07:14

My cycles seem to all be short now - 26/27 days when usually 32/35 back in the day!

Also experiencing multiple short dreams every night - quite a good feature!

PrioritisePleasure24 · 13/11/2024 07:27

I take menopace, they’ve been around for years. I feel like they help. Not too sure but only £5 a packet. HRT defo would be an option as things progress.

I’m 45 my symptoms while there aren’t too crazy. Memory/brain fog, sleep issues which i’ve had forever, anxiety/overthinking, joint pain.PMT is worse. Periods did go a bit haywire with up to 10 day late but currently at 24-28 cycles.
Magnesium before bed helps my sleep and probably joint pain too.
We should all be taking vitamin d at this time of year which again will help aches and pains possibly.

I try and eat nutritionally well and exercise as much as i can.

@PrioritisePleasure24

Did you cycles go longer then shorter?

Over what timescale have you had this?

Mine have gone from longer very heavy flow to shorter cycles with 2 days of slight flow followed by 2 days of heavy flow that abruptly stops.

I would say I've had peri symptoms for 5 years.

threelions · 13/11/2024 18:18

My cycles went from bang on 28 days to 35/36 and longer, my period would end then start back up again. Now I'm on the mini pill I'm not sure if I'll get any periods.

I'm going to buy some Menopace as well to try. My hair is dreadful at the moment and I cannot seem to do a thing with it. I've bought the Pantene range of menopause shampoo and conditioner and it's helped a little.

Anyone else suffering with wind? No matter what I eat I have horrendous wind and sorry for the tmi but the smell is horrific!! My next purchase is going to be some probiotics!!

For the first time in months my period has arrived on time! I wasn't sure whether the pill would stop them. I am quite surprised it's turned up bang on time this month

So I've been on the mini pill for about 3/4 months. Periods have stopped but I've been constantly spotting.

In the last few weeks though I've had awful anxiety, my mood has been awful, I'm either feeling low or want to rip someone's head off. Coupled with that I've had awful flatulence, bloating and weird digestive things going on. I have zero energy and no drive to do anything. Libido has also disappeared.

I think it's safe to say peri is kicking in.

@threelions sorry to hear that. So I actually saw the GP just before Xmas, I requested a female. Went for like three different ailments, suspect peri included. Explained the irregular and heavier periods, anxiety and anger. She said sounded like it, and offered me HRT on the spot. I declined as didn't feel like I needed it but basically wanted someone to confirm it was rather than saying it wasn't. Cycle not quite as irregular but def still got the anger and more chin hairs! Also got a blood test done FSH normal but notes on test as I got copy says peri not ruled out as obv they have to do blood tests at specific times of month for hormone levels to be measurable within the limits to conclude peri. Anyway I'm def in peri.

Classic peri unfortunately. Hopefully things will improve for us both x

threelions · 01/02/2025 12:01

I'm in two minds whether to see a GP and ask about HRT. Will it work? What if my symptoms are nothing to do with peri?

For the last month I've had lingering anxiety some days it's almost too much other days I can manage it. I have had anxiety for years and every now and then it goes haywire for no reason.

I used to be really motivated and would get up and clean the house from top to bottom. Now I just sit and procrastinate because I have no energy to do it. I spend all week trying to give 110% at work so when it gets to the weekend I have nothing left.

OP posts:
cbar123 · 01/02/2025 12:40

@threelions I too have also always suffered anxiety but this was next level and also the rage...I also gave the Dr an example and I think she knew exactly where i was coming from. It's worth going even to get your bloods checked to rule out anything else. Also I have to say unless your job involves life and death scenarios why give 110% if it's absolutely draining you. It's so important to find the balance, if you can, especially as you take on hormonal and body changes. Is there no peri/menopause guidance at work. I know recently something has been brought out at ours and there's also groups you can join. To be honest I speak about it quite bluntly to my director and LM they are both female. One older, one a few years younger so they understand.

threelions · 01/02/2025 13:56

My work doesn't involve life and death but it does need to you be on form all the time. Where I work does have menopause seminars etc but there's no way I'd be able to take time away from my role to attend one. I could speak to my LM but I'd rather not.

I am going to make a GP appointment and ask for bloods - they always refuse because they say it isn't reliable on checking hormone levels. I've spoken to male GPs in the past though so maybe this time a female would be better.
