she has just got over chicken pox, (couple weks) is really miserable today. Hasn't eaten. Is bf and had some boob.

Can't tell if her fontanelle is raised as she has loads of hair.

Has had calpol, no real difference, (she doesn't like it so not much stays in)

Shall I let her sleep or get her temp down first?

Temp down first - that's very high for a baby. Do you have any child Nurofen? I find it much more effective than Calpol.

have you tried anything else to lower her temp?

liahgen · 15/04/2008 17:34

have just stripped her at mo, she in nappy now, was gonna give it half hour. Haven't got nurofen but can pop up shop, got a teenager here to watch littlies.

Just a bit worried about chicken pox complications, seems to have come on a bit quick.
thanks

I would ring the gp and just get their advice. If Calpol isn't working I would want advice. Some children do run high temps more easily than others and though it might be best to let her sleep it off i would just ring anyway.

Mercy · 15/04/2008 17:38

Yes, I've foudn that Calpol takes 20 mins or so to kick but I think it's worth getting some Nurofen just in case. And then consider phoning Gp as Ruty says.

liahgen · 15/04/2008 17:38

yeah think i will, they might squeeze me in at 6 before they close. Better that than sitting listening to her breathe all night,

Good idea - hope dd gets better very soon.

sorkycake · 15/04/2008 17:42

Oh sorry to hear your lo isn't well Liaghen, and that is a high temp for a littlee.
I think I'd give some calprofen and wait 20 minutes to see if her temp comes down. Is she okay in herself or a bit woozy?

If the temp isn't down in 20 minutes of the calprofen ring NHSdirect, they should give you an appt for a out of hours surgery, or A&E.

Getting over the chicken pox can leave them a little more open to another bug ime. Keep b'fing her regularly for fluids and general goodness.

Let us know how she gets on, bless her.

NorthernLurker · 15/04/2008 17:44

So she's sleepy as well? I wouldn't wait tbh - take her to a&e.

ruty · 16/04/2008 08:08

any news? hope she is better this morning.

liahgen · 16/04/2008 08:55

hiya ladies. spoke to gp last night, he said let her sleep. Checked her when she woke up to feed in night, (twice) still temp of 38/9 all night.

liahgen · 16/04/2008 17:52

Well back from docs. bubs been same all day, lethargic, miserable with uncontrollable temp.

Doc reckons it's a throat infection so she has antibiotics. Hopefully, they'll kick in quickly, poor little mite, i feel really sorry for her.

Got nurofen aswell cheers ladies.

just an update on my littlie.

She was admitted to hospital yesterday afternoon with a temp of 41.5!!

We came home this evening, she has gasterentiritis(sp) bless her.

Doe sanyone know will it give her tummy ache aswell cos she's really miserable, crying and wanting to be held but not iykwim?

OP posts:
emma1977 · 18/04/2008 23:21

Poor thing.

Gastroenteritis will give her tummyache and maybe make her sick.

Is her temp now more controlled. Is she eating/drinking OK? Is she alert?

liahgen · 18/04/2008 23:24

yeah they've got her temp down to jut over 37. Not eating and she's breastfed so she's just having that.

Got electrolyte to give her after each nappy but she won't drink it.

It's horrible when you can't comfort them isn't it.
She's asleep now so will see how she gets on in night.
If she gets worse or temp rises within 24 hrs she has to go back to childrens ward, if more than 24 hrs, then back through A&E

Kids, like to keep us on our toes eh?

I have been told a different thing Potpourri, i dont want to contradict as your way makes sense - however i have been told that it is better to give them a WARM (as warm as is safe actually) bath and then leave them to dry in the air, hair too. The reason for this is because the warmth of the bath brings the blood to the surface as the body tries to cool itself, then the evaporation takes the heat away quickly and drops the temp - the body works with this and contributes. If you sponge down with cool water this constricts the blood vessels at the surface and the body tries to compensate for the cold and tries to bring the temp back up again. The whole thing seemed pretty contradictory to me, but when the nurse explained it to me it does make sense and it WORKS This is quite new advice that you will receive from alot of health pros now, and NHS direct i think.
