Anyone understand cholesterol results?

Had my cholesterol measured under the Our Future Health scheme (finger prick). Results: Total cholesterol 6.62mmol/L, HDL 2.59mmol/L, Triglycerides 1.53 mmol/L. Nurse said they don't normally worry unless first reading is above 9, but have had it checked at GP surgery.

GP doesn't seem worried about my results, but they are Serum cholesterol level 5.5mmol/L, Serum HDL cholesterol level 2.8 mmol/L, Serum cholesterol/HDL ratio 2.0, Serum non high density lipoprotein cholesterol level 2.7 mmol/L.

It's been about six weeks between blood tests and I've tried to make a few adjustments - no cream, lower fat cheese, less cheese, biscuits with less saturated fat (don't have butter, spread, lots of fried foods, eat meat anyway).

Would the above adjustments be enough to bring level down from 6.62 to 5.5, or is a finger prick test not that accurate?

Also, are the results provided by GP OK? Then would you say there were OK if I said my Dad and Grandad died of heart attacks.

There have been a few posters who have done Our Future Health who have had very different results from the GP test. So it could be that.

Good to cut down on saturated fat, but you'll get more cholesterol control by adding fibre to your diet. If cholesterol is found to be high, though, the dietary route is usually not enough.

Have checked out posts on Our Future Health and you seem to be right, AnnaMagani.

LettheSunShineIn2 Thanks for that. We only eat wholegrain bread, wholewheat pasta etc, so guess it's a case of trying to incorporate more fruit and veg, although, I do have them with every meal. Trying to eat a few more nuts as I've lost about 4lbs in last six weeks being more careful and making my bmi 18.5!

Hard to know if I should be doing more though.

My question about results provided by two different providers seem to have been answered.

Just wondering if I should be concerned about my results, especially with family history, and whether I should be doing more.
