He's refused everything I've given him today, breast milk, formula, lunch, water. Everything. I'm worried he's not going to get enough calories in him or he's going to get dehydrated. Should I just go with it as he's doing what is instinctively right for him or should I try something else? He's had three bouts of diarrhoea today, not spectacular, but he's not himself, really grizzly and hacked off.

I may be being over causious but if it was my baby I would be asking for some help. I would rather be an over anxious parent than leaving it too late and ending up in hospital.

As you've mentioned dehydration is the main risk and it can happen very quickly. Speak to your HV or GP.

can you use a medicine syringe to get some fluids into him?

HeadFairy · 15/04/2008 13:53

I don't think you're being over cautious cupcake, I think I'll pop over the road and speak to the pharmacist at the chemist. I'm really worried he's had nothing in him since last night.

Hmmm the pharmacist suggested a bit of weak ribena in a bottle which he's had, only about an ounce, but it's the most he's had all day. I've got the diaralyte on standby. Should i still try and feed him, and what's best? Dry toast or normal food?

I'd stick to fluids I think.

The doctor told me the other week that he would not be worried if a baby had not eaten for a week as long as they had been taking fluids.

(but he knows that a mother would be beside herself with worry)

thanks devonmummy. Does fluids include breastmilk and/or formula?

breast milk is best as it's got all the nutrients they need

thanks devonsmummy, I've been bfing him all day, his appetite is back a bit, but not much so topping up with bm. Only prob was that I was supposed to be slowing down for my return to work in 10 days (oops!) I guess I'll just have to take a pump to work with me.
