I came off a bike at speed on a steep descent five days ago. I landed on my side and have extreme bruising and swelling as per the photo. My leg would normally be about the same width all the way from knee to thigh. I was seen at a&e after being turned away from minor injury and after being told my condition needed a hospital visit by 111. Break was ruled out as I can put some weight on it but I can’t walk properly. I had an X-ray to check for blood in the muscle which was ruled out and the dr said I’d need to be checked for something else by a more senior medic. He went off to arrange but he came back and said the senior medic had said I was fine to go.

I’m a bit concerned that five days on the swelling hasn’t gone down at all though it hasn’t got worse, and there is a sharp pain at the top of the leg. I’m alternating ibuprofen and paracetamol, trying to elevate as much as possible whilst also moving a bit too. Any thoughts on timescale for recovery and if I should be concerned about the sharp pain and the swelling still being the same level and hot/hard?

Oh gosh OP that is quite the bruise! I would definitely follow it up. Can you get in to see your GP?

I think if it's not getting any worse and the leg isn't feeling tighter or getting numb then there probably isn't much to do, there's a lot of blood there that's trapped causing that bruise and it'll take a couple of weeks for the body to digest it.

I’d agree if it wasn’t for the sharp pain. Is it when you try and walk?
I think that needs a new x-ray.

It may be a bit late, but have you tried arnica on it to help the bruising go down? The pain does sound worrying though. Hope you feel better soon!

bluedomino · 07/08/2024 07:59

Wow. Just Wow that is some bruise. Can you measure it to see if it's decreasing? Personally I think you need it checked again. Is the pain in your groin?
Hope you feel better soon, have a hug🫂

I’d be going back and getting it checked. Did they X-ray for a break?

8008Bee · 07/08/2024 09:39

did they check your hip in the X-ray? your injury looks quite high up

poor you - hope you get better soon

supercatlady · 07/08/2024 09:41

Google tells me some people can walk on a fractured hip or a hairline thigh fracture

Cycleaccident · 07/08/2024 10:08

Thanks for the replies. Yes, the hip/pelvis was the focus of the X-ray and the reason minor injuries wouldn’t see me. The bruise is dramatic however I’m not too worried about that, it’s the swelling. After last night, it has maybe gone down fractionally. The dr said I wouldn’t be able to take weight on it if it were broken but I too have heard of people winning Olympic medals on fractures!
