My dd (12) has had bleeding when she has been using the toilet so the gp asked for a stool sample which i assume was to test for blood?
but there was visible blood on it so im not sure if thats ok or not! Has anyone else had this and what are they actually looking for in this?

Yes, it’s fine

Yes i think they do check for blood but also inflammation markers like fecal calprotectin and things like this which could be an indicator of inflammatory bowel disease.

From what i remember there were at least 6 or 7 things they checked so they can tell a lot from a sample.

In my case the numbers were super high, I had a totally harmless polyp which was removed and all my issues stopped straightaway!

Hope you get a solution soon!

My son & husband had to do a couple of stool samples as they both bled a few times & it was quite a lot of blood. They had the calprotectin test which can sometimes indicate Crohns, Colitis etc, my husband ended up having a camera (thankfully all ok, he just has extremely bad flareups of IBS). My sons tests came back fine, & they said any future issues & he'll have to have a camera as well, but we think it's either related to stress with him (he was sitting his mock GCSE exams at the time) & that he has IBS & possibly mildly lactose intolerant as his symptoms seem worse after too much milk/ cream. They prescribe him Buscopan for any pain/ cramping.
