Once you have found the right treatment for nappy rash, how long should it take to clear up?

I am a first time mum and no one I know had a major problem with nappy rash - I feel so guilty LO's whole bottom is red raw

Oh it can be heartbreaking can't it

What are you putting on it, and how are you cleaning his/her bottom?

go and see the GP if its really bad in case there is a superadded fungal/bacterial infection and need a different cream (not your fault at all by the way!)
certainly if it doesn't get better then see GP

this info may help

I tried all sorts of sudocreme type stuff but none worked for my LO as well as pure aloe gel.
You can get it in holland & barratt's and though it's not that cheap it only took 3 days for rash and shiny red skin to disappear.
We use it all the time now and even with an upset tummy and rather unpleasant nappies at the moment it seems to have kept any rash away

I have been using metanium which didnt seem to do the trick so onto thrush cream. Am going to see HV on Thurs so will ask her to have a look. Am worried she will be stern with me as I really do feel like I must be doing something wrong.

Aloe gel - I might get some of this in case there is a next time - LO seems to have pretty sensitive skin!!!

Thanks

Bepanthan is fab cream for nappy rash BUT - if red raw ( maybe with some little red spots - possible thrush infection so you will need something like canestan
IF not fungal - i'd suggest a low dose steroid 0.5% hydrocortisone and put something like suda cream over the top .... will soon sort it out
Oh also /... if poss leave nappy off as much as poss.

If it is bleeding or looks like blisters or incrediably painful - take them to see gp.

When I took ds and it was bad they said get a cream with a high amount of zinc, bathe in salted water adn dry area thoroughly. Also change nappy frequently (i.e. every 1-2 hours).

Also advised us to put vaseline on top of the cream (we just used sudocreme I think cos it has zinc) to provide waterproof barrier.

It is worth having chat with them. They won't think you're a terrible mum. A lot of babies are more sensitive to it than others.

i think it is prob worth seeing the GP rather than medicating yourself
if its thrush/infection - hydrocort will make worse unless it also conatins an antifungal/microbial

they might treat for thrush initally but insist they do a swab as well - often thrush doesn't grow on swabs but if theres a bacterial infection you need to know, and it can take 3 days for the results to come back (so if you go back a second time you have to wait another 3 days for results)
good luck!
