DS has braces for 2-3 months and now had an underbite

Hi. As stated above my son has had top and botton braces for 2-3 months so far (expected to have them on for about 18 months apparently). As part of his treatment he also had a front lower tooth removed to make room for other teeth that seemed crowded. He's getting it paid for by the NHS as he didn't have a significant overbite (apparently) and they were worried that his teeth clashing on top of each other would damage them - in photos though his teeth always looked normal i.e that the top teeth sat over the bottom teeth. We're just spend a lot of time together as we're on holiday and I noticed that his bottom lip was sticking out further than the top one. I asked him to smile and notice that he now has an underbite - his bottom teeth stick 1-2mm out from his top teeth. I'm really worried and upset about this as, if this is just the beginning what on earth's it going to look like at the end. I intend to talk to his orthodentist about it when I get back but just wondered if anyone knows about this sort of treatment and if an underbite is normal en route to better looking teeth. I actually called the orthodentist before he started treatment seeking reassurance that it wouldn't alter his face. I was reassured it woudn't but that's exactly what's happened. Any advice gratefully received.

Lads lower jaws grow a lot around puberty , this will be accounted for as if his teeth were edge to edge before as they grew they would naturally move forward as lower jaws grow a lot in lads.

Moving teeth is a bit like shuffling beads along a piece of string , they move about a millimetre a month and the back teeth have to be shuffled around first before there is room to start moving the front teeth back.

Technically what you seem to be describing is an underjet , where lower front teeth stick out in front of top teeth.

Speak to the orthodontist but your son is really in the very early stages of treatment.

I’m currently wearing fixed braces and have to say 3 to 5 months in my teeth looked way worse than when I started. I remember feeling really upset about it! It’s a slow process and your son is in the earliest stages. I would just ask questions at the next appointment I’m sure they will have an explanation and a plan.
