I quit at the beginning of the year. First two weeks everything tasted so good that I was constantly eating and did gain a bit of weight.

I am back at my previous weight now. Probably because I don't have 1-2 glasses of wine in the evenings and 3-4 coffees in the day.

It helps to chew on carrot sticks in the first few days when you are trying to occupy mouth & hands.

Good luck!

Ploufplouf · 14/04/2008 19:50

Oh thanks that's very encouraging, I stopped wine and coffee !

I lost weight because I gave up smoking and took up running. Best trade I ever made.

Err... then I put on an awful lot of weight... but was because I got pregnant .

PABLOP · 14/04/2008 19:52

Good luck Ploufplouf, I gave up a year ago when I found out I was pregnant. I am so proud of myself!

BettySpaghetti · 14/04/2008 19:55

I gave up 10 years ago and, despite being on crutches for 6 wks at the time, didn't put on weight.

I think I made a conscious effort not to eat crap and also wasn't drinking for much of that time (due to heavy duty painkillers).

Drink lots of water and chew gum?

But most of all, keep up the good work!

Read through Stop Smoking Center and Why Quit. It helps a lot.

Don't forget to do the "mileage" counter.

Mine is:

My Mileage
Smoke-Free Days: 106
Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,062
Amount Saved: ?275.60
Life Gained:
Days: 9 Hrs: 1 Mins: 3 Seconds: 27

to see I would have smoked more than a thousand cigarettes (if I hadn't quit) since the beginning of the year. And I was only on half a pack a day!

MrsMattie · 15/04/2008 12:01

On average I have put on about half a stone each time I've given up smoking, but it comes off once I am over the worst cravings. You are using food as a replacement at the moment, but eventually you'll get used to life without putting something in your mouth every 5 minutes, I promise!

OrmIrian · 15/04/2008 12:05

Well I was pregant so hard to tell. But my DH has ....everytime he has 'given up' .

If I were you I'd not worry too much - try not to eat reasonably obviously - but knocking the fags on the head is the most important thing. Worry about the weight later. DH has given up for 2 weeks this time and we're both going back on low-carb next week.

OrmIrian · 15/04/2008 12:06

'try to eat reasonably'

MyChemicalToilet · 15/04/2008 12:24

Well done PloufPlouf

I gave up with the help of Cote (hello there!) and some others on MN at the start of the year - I am still not smoking.

Yes, I have put on a bit of weight, but I feel so VERY much fitter. I hope that the Summer diet of salads, and more activity will help.

Best wishes, you are doing a GOOD thing.
