Blood in 5 month baby's poo

Anyone experienced this? My DS has been noticeably tired today, then had an enormous poo this afternoon - not a hard one, an ordinary breastmilk poo, just loads of it. He has fed ok most of the day, but went quite droopy mid pm, pooed again and there was blood and mucous in the poo. He then went quiet and just wanted to sleep and so missed the last feed of the day and went to bed early. No temp or sickness.

Called doc who said not to panic and take him for a check up in the morning, but I still feel a bit anxious...its the droopiness I find unnerving almost more than the blood. Any thoughts...?

how much blood? was it fresh as in red? or black as in old blood?

avenanap · 14/04/2008 19:24

This happened to my ds, it was only a small amount, GP said he was fine though. Was there alot?

belgo · 14/04/2008 19:25

does he appear to be in pain?

OlderNotWiser · 14/04/2008 19:28

Maybe the effort of producing a kingsize poo has worn him out?

DD had some small streaks of blood in her poo a couple of times when she was a similar age. I think it was just that the force of the poo had torn a couple of tiny blood vessels.

I have to admit, I don't know. But if you feel really concerned, I would speak to a doctor again.

belgo · 15/04/2008 13:05

How is he today?

OlderNotWiser · 15/04/2008 14:08

Thanks for asking, bizarrely he seems completely fine despite having had the runs in the night several times. Really weird poo (if its not TMI) thats bright green and really mucousy with a small amount of blood again. But eating/cooing as normal so seems basically ok. Have been to doc who just said if he gets worse or starts vomiting take him to hospital; have left a bright green sample for them to send off and check out - loverly! All very strange...

sounds like a nasty bug - it's good they've taken a sample. If you are still bfing, that's the best thing for him.

Keep an eye on him and if he develops a temperature, vommits, appears to be in pain or passes more blood in his nappy, take him the hospital rather than the GP. As a baby, I developed a condition called intussusception, which is a blockage of the intestine...I was passing blood in my nappy but it wasn't immediately diagnosd by the GP as it isn't commonly seen in baby girls. I had an operation to correct it and all was fine. I believe that they can treat it non surgically nowadays aswell. I'm sure this isn't what your ds has but it's always good to be aware of these conditions.

Hope he's back to normal soon.

Is he solely breastfed? Have you been eating anything outof the ordinary lately?

I ask because blood and mucus in a baby's poo can be signs of an allergy. Has he/you had anti-biotics recently?

lucysmum · 15/04/2008 21:05

my DD2 had intersuseption like summer111. As well as 'redcurrent jelly' nappy (classic sign apparently) she was projectile vomiting green bile. Went back to the docs a few times - mother's instinct something was really wrong - and even in hospital it took some time to diagnose as it is apparently pretty rare, by which stage she was v dehydrated. Very scary, had to be blue light transferred to another hospital as it is classed as an emergency. sorted out non surgically in the end with an air enema - So i would second acting on any other signs of illness.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Im fairly sure now its nothing bad, mostly because he is otherwise so well, other than lots of green poo still, but no blood last 24 hours and feeding fine, happy etc. My only niggling worry is that hes always been a funny one with the bowels....went to once a week poos at 2 weeks old, interspersed with the occasional week of almost constant pooing, now is once every 4 days, this current phase aside. I guess there is a lurking concern he may have some kind of bowel problem since it never seems quite settled....but hes chubby and cheerful so I guess nothings seriously wrong. But will be sure to keep an eye on things as advised.
