Runners, I need some advice.......

I've just recently started running - I was walking and decided to up the pace a bit and incorporated a bit of running, so now I can run for as long as I am walking. I could do with some tips on stretching/warming up as I was killed with shin splints for a while, maybe I've got used to them, anyway the pain lessened the more I ran. I do find it strange how quickly I've got into it - I feel a bit twitchy if I don't get out for my daily half hour
Any tips or advice would be great.

Hi there multitasker.

I started running a year ago with a friend. We started off doing 3 miles twice a week. I have always suffered from shin splints. We did a 6 mile run for Sport relief a few weeks back and before we did that we upped our training and that made my shin splints so bad i had to stop running for about a month and then go straight into this 6 mile run. I was ok and ran the whole way in a good time but am now not running again.

You should never run when you have shin splints (like I did!!!) and you should take time off to let them heal.

To start with for a warm up you could do a brisk 5minute walk and then go into running. When you finish you should always stretch your legs, especially calfs as this is my problem and one of the reasons my shin splints are so bad.

Hope this helps, will be back on tonight if you have any other questions!

I am a lapsed, pregnant runner. When I started running from scratch, I used the training plan on the race for life website. Found it realistic and saw results really quickly.

Also, have you got proper running shoes that suit your feet properly?

multitasker · 14/04/2008 17:16

Yeah I have reeboks although I might treat myself to a good pair of asiscs (sp?) when I can run most of the time. I know I probably should warm up more but am impatient! I think I'll spend a good 5 mins warming up tomorrow to see if that helps.

look at www.sportsshoes.com for advice on feet

also worth going to a proper running shop and having your 'gait' analysed.

I thought I had shin splints but i didnt

btw

i find cooling down to be more important than warming up......a few minutes of brisk walking is warm up enough for me....

cool down stretching is MEGA important

From what I've read, I think I have outerpronation - I seem to run on the outsides of my feet. I might go to a podiatrist to see if she can make me something for my trainers.

I would try a running shops first - I really would. LOTS cheaper!

Can I just hijack quickly? How do people know how far they are running? Is there something you can buy to attach to yourself when running?

popsycal · 14/04/2008 19:36

go on mapmyrun.com and you can measure!

beware - very addictive

Thanks!

I sorted my shin pains by getting my gait analysed at a running shop, and buying the trainers they advised - never had a problem since.

The sports shoes website is very good, but I think it would probably be better to get fitted properly first.

Its amazing how quickly my bum has shrunk with the exercise and a less indulgent diet
