Tooth infection relief

Row23 · 02/08/2024 06:46

The gum around my wisdom tooth is infected and I can feel pain from my ear, through my jaw, into my neck, particularly when I swallow. I’ve had wisdom tooth pain before but less severe and it usually clears on its own. This time however I’ve had to get antibiotics (I’m on day 2). I’m taking paracetamol throughout the day and mouthwashing a few times a day. Sometimes I put a hot water bottle on that area of my face and that provides temporary relief too, but not particularly enjoyable given the recent heat!
Are there any other tips or tricks for pain relief / clearing infection?

Yes, i found vanilla essence rubbed onto gum helped.

WhatMe123 · 02/08/2024 07:01

Rinse with warm salt water

Swifty1newmama · 02/08/2024 07:05

Try and avoid the hot water bottle as can cause the infection to spread out into the face. Use cold compress instead.

Power yoga sorry rather than yoga for stretching

Ooos sorry wrong thread

You need clove oil. Rub some gently on the gums; it really will help. Alternate paracetamol with ibuprofen. And definitely cold compress, not hot; as the pp mentioned, using heat can actually make an infection worse as it could spread further.

Justcallmebebes · 03/08/2024 08:47

Ambesol gel or liquid is good as it numbs the area

Wingingit11 · 03/08/2024 13:38

You need Panadol black box (seasoned tooth issues goer!). Sorry - it really is the worst

changedusernameforthis1 · 03/08/2024 14:10

Dentagen helped me, also used colloidal silver to speed up antibiotics and specifically used corsodyl mouthwash for the pain.

Hope you feel better soon OP, toothache is horrendous and you have my full sympathy 💐

Londondreamer · 03/08/2024 14:21

I had this a couple of weeks ago, horrendous.
I tried all sorts but what eventually helped was Colgate Peroxyl mouthwash. I used it about three times a day and felt better the day after I started but kept using it for about a week. I did try the corsodyl one first but didn't seem to do anything and tasted foul.

You can get it from Amazon. Good luck, it's horrible but does go away.

LateMumma · 03/08/2024 14:49

Corsodyl swished over the infection site for 3 mins, 3 or 4 times a day. It's intense but it really, really works. Hope it feels better soon

Please NEVER put clove oil in the mouth and especially on the gum. It burns and is irritant and that’s without the people allergic to it. I have had to take teeth out where clove oil has burned through to the bone.

The only place clove oil belongs is in the bin.

please NEVER recommend it.

Thanks everyone - from reading the above I’m swapping between paracetamol and ibuprofen, taking the antibiotics, and done a few salt water washes which does seem to help a bit. I’m going to get some Panadol tomorrow.
I’ve ordered some new mouthwash and the little toothbrush thingys.
Hopefully everything works together and clears it up soon! 🤞 Tooth pain is really miserable!

@Lollygaggle really?! Before I had my wisdom tooth out I would use clove oil on the infected area and it saved me, it was the only thing that took the pain away. My dentist didn't seem concerned about it either.

littlebitfat · 03/08/2024 20:16

Not a tips sorry, but would you consider getting it taken out? I had this for over a year and was told it needed to be surgically removed.. I then went to a dentist in a different area, and they pulled it out in less than a minute! The relief!

Balloonhearts · 03/08/2024 20:19

Floss it, with those little brushes, be absolutely brutal. If it's infected then there's likely debris under the gum flap. If it doesn't bleed, do it again. When you get whatever it is out, it'll probably taste bad.

Double up with ibuprofen, you can take them with paracetamol, they don't interact. Ibuprofen lysine is particularly effective on tooth pain. Sleep on an incline if you can, it will be worse when lying flat.

Really

clove oil burns , it is acid , many people are also allergic . As I said I have taken teeth out where gums have burnt down to the bone https://ihrjournal.com/ihrj/article/view/222/778#:~:text=The%20oral%20soft%20tissue%20reactions,delayed%20hypersensitivity%20reaction%20in%20lower

warning some links may contain photos of nasty burns. Eugenol is another name for clove oil.

Warning here are photos of clove oil burns in the mouth . Please bin it , don’t use it and especially do not advise its use

What about actual clove rather than clove oil? Chew them and let the pulp sit on the area for a few minutes. I was going to recommend this but don't want to now in case it's as bad to do this?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 03/08/2024 22:42

Don't use alcohol based mouthwash if you're on metronidazole, though. And leave it another 3 days after the course is finished to be sure it's out if your system.

The active ingredient in clove oil is exactly the same as in cloves ie Eugenol. Leaving Eugenol , clove oil or cloves in contact with the gums for any length of time is a bad idea. Please do not advise anyone to do this .

Again here is yet another reference to why you should not be using clove oil or cloves placed inside your mouth for any length of time . https://cameochemicals.noaa.gov/chemical/20399#:~:text=SYMPTOMS%3A%20This%20compound%20is%20a,%2C%20nausea%2C%20diarrhea%20and%20convulsions.

When I had dry socket after a tooth extraction, my dentist packed it with a paste which had eugenol as the active ingredient. I remember saying afterwards it tasted like cloves and she explained.

I'm really concerned now and wondering about complaining having read this

The Eugenol used in dry socket treatments is now mostly being replaced by other ingredients because of sensitivity/allergy concerns . However the Eugenol containing treatments come highly diluted as a paste with zinc oxide and other ingredients on a fibrous substrate . In other words liquid eugenol in or out of an oil base is not applied directly in high concentration to gums .

There is a massive difference between a medicated dressing containing a little of an active ingredient applied by a professional , and concentrated Eugenol placed on gums .
