i have picked dd up from nursery today and they have put a sign on the door saying head lice are about, just to be aware.
is there anything i can put on her to repel them? like tee tree oil, does that work?
would rather she smelt of that than get lice.
any ideas would help, thanks.

i buy a spray from morrisons whihc is tea tree, you jsut spray their hair and (in my daughters circ) pin it up out of the way, doesnt smell nice when putting on but, disapears after a while and (touch wood) there has been lots of this in dd's class and she hasnt had them yet!

ROSEgarden · 14/04/2008 15:09

doesnt smell awful, just IMO quite lime(ish) ?

my sis uses tea tree oil shampoo herself as she is always catching them off her boys who get them all the time at school. They still get them, but she is nit free!

Anything with teetree oil, yes
or put a few drops into a bottle of conditioner, mix it up and do regular comb-throughs with a nit comb

and it doesn't mean that your DC will get them. In four years of nursery and then school, my DS has never had them, inspite of letters coming home at least once a month.

I usde a water spray to damp my dds' hair in the morning before brushing. We've had lots of problems with lice, and I started adding 3 drops of tea tree and 3 drops of lavendar oil to the water. Apparently lice do not like either of these (and the lavendar covers the smell of the tea tree a bit). As ROSEgarden says, the smell fades pretty quickly anyway.

i do swear by this spray(although like someone else has said we may juts be lucky..i asl plait dd's hair so its neevr dangling around)..it £1.99 and last for ages...am itching now...

Clure · 14/04/2008 15:22

Yes tea tree and keep hair up. I still catch them - primary teacher hazzard! If I do get them use nit comb and conditioner every other day.

lizandlulu · 14/04/2008 18:22

ok, thanks everyone.

dd hates having her hair brushed, washed, sprayed, in fact anything to do with hair she hates. its hard enough brushing it in a morning, never mind putting it up, but will have to pin her down!
