Any ideas what this may be?

I suffer with loose stools quite frequently to be honest it's quite normal for me on and off. Probably caused by a crappy diet some mild food intolerance and alcohol.

I was prescribed lots of new medication in May, one of which was lansoprazole. This was to protect my stomach from the other 3 I suspect (it wasn't explained and I was groggy on discharge) but they are bisoprolol, amlodipine and Atorvastatin.

Stomach has been pretty normal until around two weeks ago when I would wake early desperate needing toilet and loose. Then fine all day.

However last week this has ramped up to severe watery passing. It is worse in the morning or right before bed, not always straight after I've eaten. Sometimes mild stomach discomfort, but I feel OK in myself, no nausea and feel hungry! It's got really bad the last few days and not improving so have a gp appointment pre booked for next week. I am keeping water and food down and no fever but I am sometimes going 6 or 7 times in the morning passing loose watery stool.

I see that c diff can be a side effect of lansoprazole.

Or maybe a bug?

I'm getting fed up and a bit concerned.

Hi. Tell them your symptoms, going to the toilet a lot is not good. Maybe a sudden allergy to food or medicine. When you go to see your DR. you can ask for a blood test for Coeliac disease and obtain a FIT test pack. How old are you? If you don't mind me asking. Have you been abroad this year?
Take care

Itsdare · 04/08/2024 16:16

I am 42 and I haven't been abroad recently.

I have started new medication and one can cause c diff I believe.

I'm going to ask for a test.

I take both Amlodopine and Atorvastatin, and have experienced no side effects at all.
Obviously different people react in different ways.

I have an appointment with a gp tomorrow but I pushed to submit a sample yesterday as I need to know what's causing this, it's not getting any better and the nocturnal diarrhea is getting worse.

It says on the form egc under investigations required.

From what I can gather that stands for early gastric cancer, but will it also check for bugs, infections etc does anyone know. It wasn't explained to me and I know I can ask tomorrow just feeling pretty low now

Anything to do with gastro stuff has the widest range of causes you can imagine, with simple to serious things having the same symptoms - it's incredibly frustrating getting anywhere.

When you see your GP tomorrow be armed with any patterns you've noticed with food/drinks (think fats etc) & the colour/texture of the stools.

Also if you have any pain & if so where it is.

Burping & flatulence?

Be as descriptive as possible without offering solutions.

If they've got you flagged for any kind of gastric cancer you'll be put on the two week pathway for a colonoscopy. Keep in mind that only around 10% of ppl referred that way get a cancer diagnosis, so the odds are always on your side. They likely will want to do bloods to check your full blood count, inflammation markers, probably coeliacs, liver & amylase. They may also do cancer markers (which even if positive do not equate to having cancer!)

Do you know what the stool sample was checking for?

"Diarrhea is possible with all statins, including atorvastatin. Similar to muscle and joint pain, diarrhea often gets better over time. Avoiding fatty and fried foods may help lessen diarrhea and provide benefits for your cholesterol at the same time".

Google says the above. Are you still eating crap? Or maybe bonds to the fatty crap you are eating to push it out your body quicker hence the diarrhoea.

Stop eating that type of food and see if it helps.

Chicken and rice and chicken soup, eggs etc for two days ought to sort you out.

Cut out any artificial sweeteners (in diet and surprisingly non-diet soft drinks, so check labels). Coke Classic is ok though. Pepsi is not ok.

Drink plenty water as you'll be dehydrated.
