Question about cold sores?

How easy do you guys really think it is to spread cold sores to your eyes?

I woke up yesterday with one cold sore and by the end of today I now have over 10 blisters on my top lip. They have been driving me insane all day so painful and so full of liquid. I never ever touch them but today decided that I just had to pop them to help with the pain.

didn’t think much of it until I told my mum how much better they felt and she said it’s the worst thing I could of done as I may have spread it to my eyes ….. cue the panic !!!!

I actually popped them with some cotton pads and warm salty water and then washed my hands instantly - and very thoroughly.

do you think it’s as easy as people make out it is to spread them?

I don’t think they spread that easy, not unless you popped them and then immediately touched your eyes without washing them. You may however get them on your fingers. I now don’t get them on my lips, but every month I get one on my finger

Omg what! I didn’t even know this was possible!! How do you notice it and what do you do to stop it spreading further?

They do spread quite easily unfortunately.
I wouldn't ever pop them, I've never heard of that before to be honest. As soon as you feel the very slightest tingle of one coming along, put on some Virasorb ( much cheaper than Zovirax and works just as well ) and take ibuprofen which helps to take any swelling down. Awful things !

Look up Herpectic whitlow

Iwasafool · 31/07/2024 21:53

How long have you had them? If they aren't a recent thing you will have built up anti bodies so unlikely to spread.

Wowzel · 31/07/2024 21:54

If they are that bad, contact your GP and ask for aciclovir asap

Hopperinhawkins · 31/07/2024 21:54

Huge sympathies, I'm a huge sufferer and now get them on my gums and in my throat. Vile.
Don't panic, you probably haven't spread them but practise good hygiene. Wash your hands after every touch and get acyclovir tablets!

Erlouise · 31/07/2024 21:57

@Hopperinhawkins @Wowzel they are awful aren’t they.
I always wash hands super thoroughly when I have them as always so conscious of spreading them.
I do have and am on aciclovir tablets but it’s just my luck that my stress is so bad at the moment that I’ve still managed to get them even on the tablets!

@Iwasafool years & years! I’m talking since I was about 12 or 13 and I’m currently late 20s so well over 10 years.

As someone who grew up with them I’m so careful about hygiene. I wash my hands if I touch near a cold sore I use a separate cloth and bowl of water to wash my face because I’m wary about cross contamination. I have managed not to be affected elsewhere and my children have never had them as I was extra careful with them.

All you coldsore sufferers probably know this already, but please be incredibly careful around young babies. My friend’s newborn died at just a few days old after contracting the herpes virus. Wash your hands! No kissing!

I take Acyclivir every day as a preventative measure but still get them occasionally when life is busy and stressful. It’s miserable.

Does anyone know if coldsores are linked to B12 deficiency? I read it somewhere but can’t find it again.

Harassedmum123 · 31/07/2024 23:03

Sorry to hear you are suffering so much. Have you tried L- Lysine? Apparently it is very good as a natural alternative to preventing cold sores and the herpes simplex virus though haven’t tried it myself.

Funnily enough I have a tiny cold sore on my lip, the first for ages. I use Compeed cold sore patches as soon as I feel the first tingle. They heal really quickly as the patch stops the scabbing process. They’re transparent so you can wear lipstick over the top and the cold sore is invisible.
