since pg ive had terrible gums - i go to dentist every few months and get a local anaesthetic to have my teeth cleaned and polished. anyway.

we moved last year and i was delighted to find the local dentist was taking nhs patients. so dds dh and i have been a few times now, dds are great and go no probs

last week i had a filling replaced right at the back - since then ive had an ulcer where he put in the local anaesthetic. its been agony so when i went in today to get another anaesthetic for my polish i told him this and he just shrugged. he then said "right we are going to clean and polish one side today and the other side next week so ill freeze one side"

i lie down and he gets the giant needle out i close my eyes and he starts injecting it right at the back of my mouth. ive had a few injections in my mouth and this one I KNOW is starting to go wrong. my whole neck feels like its being stabbed with knives. and my bottom lip feels like that too. i know as a nurse that he is probably putting the injection in too fast (i am thinking all this in a split second) so i lift my arm and tap his elbow to say "please stop"

he withdraws the needle sits back and starts SHOUTING at me "dont you dare grab my arm again i could have put that needle right into your neck"
well i didnt grab your arm i say
i started shaking and crying and still my neck feels horrendous. so i tell him this and he says "oh for god sake your neck isnt going to explode"
so i say back "yes i realise that im just telling you how it feels"
i am sobbing now and i just want to go home
"well you have to pay for your treatment"
so i do and then i ran all the way home

i am not a wet blanket about dentists etc and these things dont normally bother me but im still shaking and crying

does anyone know a lovely dentist in ediburgh please

Blardy dentist, shall we all phone booking appointments only to never turn up and cause him lots of stress.

OH NP poor you - hope you it is wearing off soon.
(I habe had a siliar horrid experience on the bus today where the bus driver shouted at me - all because to prevent dd3 from crying all the way home I took out her of the pushcahir and carried her bac to sit with me and dd2 whilst the bus was moving).

What a fekkin nightmare!!! I am terrified of the dentist and went to a semi private but taking on NHS patients dentist recommended to me as I had recently moved to this area.

He seemed nice enough at the start when discussing what treatment I would be getting. He then proceeded to change the treatment when he felt like it (obviously once he had started drilling so you couldnt really do anything about it) and he also injected the joint between top and bottom teeth and the roof of my mouth so my whole face went numb. When I tried to get him to stop as I was feeling the drill, he just snapped "Oh for heavens sake, you are NOT going to drown, you are just imagining it" so I had to do a garbled fingers in mouth scream so he stopped (was very angry) and when I said "I can feel the drilling" he said "Oh I am nearly finished" and kept going!!!

I have had several phone messages asking why I am not going back to the practise but I cant be @rsed to complain either as there is a whole procedure where I would have to talk to him directly first before a complaint will be taken into consideration but he terrifies me (I am very shy unfortunately)

I am now with your regular run of the mill NHS dentist and the last filling she did took 10-15mins where the b@stard dentist had me in the chair numbed up with my mouth open for 1 hr and a half even though he KNOWS I have a locking jaw but he just wanted the money.

I totally feel for you - complain if you feel up to it (I know I should have because all the work my old dentist did has to be redone so it is lucky I wont have to pay until LO is a year old) as you deserve the money back he made you pay!!!

I HATE that they think they can treat you like a piece of poo because we are all stuck for NHS dentists!!!

I hope you feel better really soon and you are ok!!!

largeginandtonic · 14/04/2008 14:44

Thought they might ask what he had used. You will have to phone reception, they may know. He may be too embarrased to come and speak to you and just pass it on through a nurse anyway. Be brave, or get dh to do it.

nailpolish · 14/04/2008 14:46

oh god poor you

Fimbo · 14/04/2008 14:47

The receptionist should be able to look up the computer and tell you, although whether she will be allowed to or not is a different matter.

nailpolish · 14/04/2008 14:48

ok i spoke to gp again and she said phone another practice

so i phoned the practice herecomethegirls recommended and the nurse there was lovely and went off and spoke ot her dentist there

she came back and said the dentist obv doenst kow what anaesthetic was used but it sounds like he hit a alrge nerve and that it should be away by tomorrow and if not i really need ot see a dentist. he said by now - 4 hrs - later i should be symptom free

largeginandtonic · 14/04/2008 16:08

Have been pondering a career move Midwifery to dentistry, it could work. At least i would be nice to the poor patients, unless i was grouchy that day
