Sharing medication

Name change and first time starting a thread so not even sure if this is the correct section but here goes. The Diazepam thread has led to this as wasn't going to bring it to attention here. Basically an elderly relative (Jill) already on medication for osteoporosis and occasional prescribed and over the counter pain killers is adequately controlling her condition but another relative (Sue) thought she was being kind and gave Jill a supply of Diazepam which she no longer needed. Jill insists she hasn't taken any yet but to add to that Sue has further offered Jill some left over Temazepam pills too! Jill accepted them.

We (other relatives) have spoken to both of them stating the obvious ie only a doctor can prescribe these pills and no one should pass them on or receive them!
It's causing a bit of a rift in the family and while some of us should let them get on with it there's also the annoyance at Sue who is very dismissive of the potential consequences of this very irresponsible act. They both know it's wrong but neither seem at all concerned.

They're adults they can do that if they want

whichfan · 29/07/2024 12:13

my bro gave me left over diazepam

oooh i loved that stuff

great for long flights

Floralnomad · 29/07/2024 12:20

Assuming they are sensible adults this wouldn’t bother me

CoastalCalm · 29/07/2024 12:35

It’s against the law

TonyeKnausgaard · 29/07/2024 12:39

You have a rift in your family over this? Does your family normally engage in petty dramas over nothing?

My friend had bad toothache the other day so I gave him a few prescription codeine tablets. Fortunately, no one cares enough to ostracise the pair of us for this unforgivable sin.

BobbyBiscuits · 29/07/2024 12:43

It's a shame to waste it. She can't get addicted if it's a limited supply. As long as she's not bingeing on them, and she knows a safe dose for herself.

Differentnametodayforthis · 29/07/2024 12:53

A 70 year old with osteoporosis and has had several falls and fainting episodes resulting in broken bones is much more vulnerable and Diazepam is not prescribed by her GP. So it's ok for her to use it. Ok then 🙄

This isn't about a friend with toothache. 🙄

Well she had temazepam that's much stronger

MrsWimpy · 29/07/2024 14:06

I take diazapam off anyone who will offer it. I also give it when I have it.
Doctors won't prescribe because of a minority who abuse it.

GoldenPombear · 29/07/2024 14:31

Can't see a problem- they're an adult and can decide unless there's a drip feed of dementia? Taking one occasionally wouldn't be an issue, they're not going to become addicted or move on to street drugs 😂

AnnaMagnani · 29/07/2024 14:57

Yes they are adults and can do as they like.

However Jill has a complex medical condition and so should not be taking prescription only meds without discussing the risks/benefits with her own doctor.

Especially ones which come with a high risk of falls and addiction.

If in the UK, I'd also be wondering why Sue has so much diazepam and temazepam hanging around and who is prescribing them to her!

persistentyes · 29/07/2024 16:08

lots of 🙄

maybe pop a diazepam OP?

The irony. You are abusing it by taking other people's prescribed, controlled drugs. And even worse giving it to others, who you cannot know it is safe for.

Whereas many who took it exactly as prescribed by their doctors end up dependent on it through not fault of their own. The withdrawal can be horrendous.

Soditsally · 29/07/2024 17:35

There's a big difference in someone taking 5mg of diazepam for a flight or because of an occasional toothache - from an elderly relative with a complex medical history - probably desperate for a good sleep with no pain who can become disoriented and confused re times and easily take these together and too often which could reduce their respiratory function and ultimately end their life

It is illegal to share prescription medication purely for safety reasons

MissMoneyFairy · 29/07/2024 17:53

If she falls over its more of a risk if she takes benzo. What does she need help with, is she in pain, anxious, not sleeping, can her doctor prescribe something less sedating.
