Breast lump

i have had a lump in my breast since late 2023. I was referred for an ultrasound and told there was nothing there even though the consultant could feel the lump during the examination.

i felt reassured for a while but then started having doubts as I didn’t really have an
explanation. The lump is movable and is at the edge/side of my right breast (where the end of an underwired bra would sit). It can be tender when touched, although i think the poking and prodding that i have done hasn’t helped that. It isn’t rock hard, but it feels hard because it sits on top of my rib.

I went back to my GP who re re referred me to the breast clinic where they repeated the ultrasound scan. They didn’t do a mammogram as i am under 35. This time the ultrasound showed the lump which they said looked like a benign lymph node. I felt relieved at this point, and carried on with my life.

fast forward 3 months, while swimming on holiday I noticed the lump feels sore again. It doesn’t feel any bigger than before, but it has been sore for over 9 months at this point. Surely a benign lymph node wouldn’t feel like this? I was under the impression that only swollen lymph nodes were painful. I am also 100% sure it just appeared from nowhere when i first felt it.

I Have been seen twice now, firstly being told there was no lump on the ultrasound, then when it was finally found, that it is a lymph node. I was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience?

Should i go back to my GP, or will i be dismissed as I have already been seen at the breast clinic?

i'm in a kind of similar situation.

Except I couldn't feel the lump in my breast, it just showed up on the regular breast screen test 2 years ago.

two weeks later I was recalled for another scan, no biopsy was done, they said they thought it was likely to just be a cyst and just leave it alone. I was kind of satisfied with that but still a bit uneasy as the next scan was not due for two years.

So fast forward two years, I went for my scheduled breast screen three weeks ago, the nurse has just rung me to say the lump is still there and there is a change in its appearance.

I now have another appointment for further detailed scans and possibly a biopsy in 2 weeks time.

So Op, in answer to your question, yes definitely get yours checked again with the GP, things can change. Hopefully yours (and mine) are nothing too serious, but, it does not do our mental health any good having to live in limbo not knowing what's going on.

Good luck, my appointment is on 15th August, I will check in and tell you what they say. Hoping it's still just a cyst.

You’re right, it’s really not a nice thing to have at the back of your mind is it. I’m glad you have your appointment soon. Yes please let me know how it goes. Hopefully it will be nothing to worry about. At least the biopsy will give you a more definitive answer 😊

I will ring the GP again today. I think it needs to be checked again xx

Keep pushing for an answer.

They can often tell from the size and feel of the lump whether it's cancer or not and as a result of that they will then do a biopsy.

I found a lump in May 2021. I had an appointment at the breast clinic and before I'd even had the results back I was told it was probably cancer.

It was but I'm fully recovered and back living my life.

Mamasuzette · 30/07/2024 21:55

@BG2015 I’m so sorry you had to go through Cancer, but it’s brilliant news that you are fully recovered now.

I have been back to my GP who has referred me back to the breast clinic. Fingers crossed the wait won’t be too long and I’ll get some answers.

Hello. Just wondered how you are all doing? I found this thread by searching 'breast lump'.

I know the answer to this is that none of you can give me an answer & I should check with GP... however, I just wondered if any of you can describe the feeling of a lump?

I noticed something a few days ago on the side of my breast that was just pea-sized and shaped. I then couldn't find the lump for a few days, but noticed it again today. I do have fairly large (F cup) breasts. Getting a GP appointment is quite complicated for me for numerous reasons and I'm really not sure if it is a concern or not? (Especially as I couldn't find the lump for a few days and it's only pea-sized.)

BG2015 · 19/09/2024 20:07

My lump was definitely bigger than a pea. I would say it was the same size as a big grape. No pain. It didn't move.

I knew it was cancer. When the nurse said at the end of my very first appointment at the hospital that they were 99% sure it was cancer and to stop taking my HRT I was totally sure it was cancer.

A number of days later, once the biopsy results were back and I met with my lovely breast surgeon, she confirmed the worst.

But my experience was mostly positive. I'm 3 years in remission.

@NewnameSep24 it can be so hard to prioritise ourselves when there are so many plates spinning, but you should go and get a GPs appointment. Mine are like Fort Knox usually but when I had a breast lump I was straight in and referred to the breast clinic.

thesandwich · 19/09/2024 20:16

@NewnameSep24 please get it checked asap. If you say breast lump you will get seen. And if on the very rare chance it is cancer, there is brilliant support on here. Loads of us who have been through it and support eachother.

DeliciousApples · 19/09/2024 20:29

All breast lumps need checked out. No matter how small.

Savemydrink · 20/09/2024 14:23

A quick update.

I went back for further testing. After a physical exam I had an ultrasound. The lump was still clearly visible. However The doctor told me they are satisfied it is still a cyst.
I have been discharged with a repeat mammogram scheduled for two years time.

I hope everyone else is doing ok
