No medised for under 2s?

Bumperlicious · 13/04/2008 09:21

I went to Boots yesterday and asked for medised for my 10 mo dd and they wouldn't sell it to me as apparently medised and other drugs with sedatives are no longer allowed for under 2s. Something about overdosing and 4 or 5 related fatalities.

Has anyone else heard this? I've never actually used medised before but I know people recommend it for colds. DD has a streaming cold and cough and is waking up several time a night but I am having to make do with calpol and saline drops

I also had trouble buying it
but I wen to the doctor and he said that what I was doing with my 14 month old was fine

She gets a dose just before bed when she has a hideous cold that means she can't breathe through her nose to feed

the fatalitys they speak of were, I think, 3 over a span of 22 years

ItsNotYouItsMe · 13/04/2008 09:25

We bought some the day before they changed the rules. It's ridiculous IMHO. 'They' don't trust parents to get the dosage right

SpecialOffer · 13/04/2008 09:26

I bought some yesterday from Boots for my 9mo no trouble!

My son has an awful cold, and medised is fab for clearing his nose so he can sleep..

Bumperlicious · 13/04/2008 09:28

Problem is I made the mistake of telling DH so even if I could procure some he is being all protective and refusing to let me even consider using it.

the thing is, that argument falls down at the first hurdle, as medised does not have a sedative in it, it has an antihistamine.

I got questioned when buying it the other day for my four year old... I did actually get quite shirty TBH, I am a responsible parent, and have had enough experience to know how to properly medicate my child thankyou very much.

FWIW, I only ever give it before bed when MiniNova has a cold anyway, but that's not the point...

Is piriton still licensed for under-2s? If so I would just get round it by giving dose of calpol plus dose of piriton (which is what I would use if I'd run out of medised anyway).

Bumperlicious · 13/04/2008 09:48

Ok, maybe I made the sedative bit up, but they said something about medised and certain other medication for children. The pharmacy assistant kept saying something "they've done a survey..." and I kept saying "do you mean actual clinical research to prove this?" anyway, I didn't get much out of them except they were going to give me the drugs so I told them that if they weren't going to let me sedate my baby I was going to sedate myself with a bottle of wine and see if that gets me a decent nights sleep. They just laughed and seemed to think I was joking...

Rubberduck looks like you can get piriton for 6 mo+, will that help do you think?

I wasn't allowed to buy Piriton for an under 2 at Boots the other day - so I think your option is out RubberDuck

lol at Bumperlicious - but I can feel your pain!

DKMA · 13/04/2008 09:55

Bumper - Piriton plus a tad of calpol should have the same effect as medised. The anitihistamine will help dry up the snot and make lo feel a bit sleepy, and calpol will do the usual pain relief thing. Actually - the piriton might just do the trick on it's own if lo doesn't have a temp or anything.

I thought it was the decongestant part of cough medicines that was causing concern - and it was not because they were dangerous - but because MHRA felt that the patient info wasn't clear enough on dose.

Sidge · 13/04/2008 10:20

Medised doesn't even contain a sedative, but an anti-histamine that can cause drowsiness. Some drugs that used to be given as sedatives eg Phenergan are not to be given to under-2s now as they cause respiratory suppression (stop them breathing).

Medised doesn't work on my toddler anyway! I give her Calpol, Ibuprofen and use lots of Snufflebabe or Vicks.

I would go to a different branch and tell them it's for an 8 year old or something, or try something different.

DKMA · 13/04/2008 10:27

Ok - I stand corrected
The MHRA has stated here that diphenlydramine (which is an ingredient in Medised) is not to be used in the under two's
However - Piriton contains Chloraphenamine - which is not mentioned in the MHRA report.

Most antihistamines are sedating in most people - it is something that happens when the histamine receptors in the brain are involved.

DKMA · 13/04/2008 10:29

Oh bugger - I am blind! Yes Chloraphenamine is mentioned - and is not to be used either!

I am curious to know why though?

there was a thread a few weeks ago and all over the news! it says lots of parents have been giving wrong doses or to much for a baby under two( but do you really think it will stop the bad ones what having been giving to much to cause consern?) some babys have died of overdose, or been realy ill

GrapefruitMoon · 13/04/2008 10:42

There was something in the news recently about the changes. I know that in the past some medicines available over the counter here for babies were only available in Ireland for older children, including cough medicines and Piriton (iirc you could only get Piriton in tablet form). The dosages were also lower in Ireland.
