Lithotripsy Clinic

Hi, has anyone had lithotripsy treatment for kidney stones? I will be having mine in the next couple of weeks, not sure what to expect.

I had it done today. I had a 10mm stone in a lower kidney lobe. I was advised to take pain killers before I went. I had to lay face down on a bed, I had a soft bra top and stretchy trousers that could be pulled up/down so didn't have to wear a gown.

The guys line up the area using xray, cover the area in ultra sound gel and then lower a warm water filled cushion onto the are. They then administer the shock waves.

You hear a steady ticking and it feels like you are being pinged with an elastic band or a mild electric shock. From time to time they do double time, which was a bit painful. I really tried to focus on relaxing and breathing steadily. When I tensed up it was worse. I would put the pain at betwen 5/10 and 7/10. Not pleasant, but not terrible.

I had the dubious honour of having the most shocks and power level of the day. They are hopeful that I won't need further treatments. I have to have an x ray next week to double check if anything is left.

Be prepared for your first wee to be very bloody. I felt a bit tired and giddy straight after, probably the anxiety, but this evening I just feel a bit bruised and have lots of little red round spots where the shock waves went in. I expect they will be bruises tommorow.

All in all not as bad as I thought it would be. Good luck.

@Pastryapronsucks How are you feeling now? Did you have to wait long for your appointment? Were you able to leave straight after or did you have to stay on a ward? Thanks so much for all the tips, I hope you are feeling better!

It was about a 6 week wait for me (Norfolk). It was a day procedure. If you have a stent it might not be.

Not feeling too bad. Sunday I passed quite a lot of bits, but none today so far. I feel bruised like I have been kicked in the side. Every so often I get a feeling like a period pain in my side and some sharp, stabbing pains in my groin and bladder. I was passing blood again last night/this morning so I suspect there are more bit to make an appearance. Just on paracetamol, although the hospital have sent instructions to my GP to give me stronger pain relief if required.

I am having today off work just in case, and because I am drinking so much I am peeing for England!

I had it done years ago. And sadly, I had to stop halfway through as the pain was just off the scale. I couldn't tolerate it at all

Unfortunately this then led to further issues with renal colic as the stone had partially shattered and got stuck and well, that pain was unbelievably bad

So back I went for lithotripsy and I bloody well lay there in absolute agony until it was done because it really was a choice of very bad pain or extremely bad pain

I don't wish to put you off - that was just my experience of it but it was incredibly incredibly painful

On the plus side, it doesn't kill you so that's something eh?Grin

Friedseasalt · 22/07/2024 22:10

@SuperBatFace oh no really 😓did they not give you any pain relief? How long did you have to wait for your appointment? I hope you are all good now!

@Friedseasalt oh it was a long time ago now - quite a few years. They advised paracetamol which did precisely nothing

You will hopefully have a totally different experience - like a previous poster. But I wish I'd known what it would be like - I was told 'twanging elastic band' but my god - not for me!

On the plus side, it'll soon be done and over. You really don't want renal colic when a stone gets stuck

Goodness, sounds like you had a rough time. I suppose its like having a tattoo or giving birth. Each person is completely different. Having passed a couple of smaller stones previously which was painful, I definitely didn't want a bout of renal colic!

SuperBatFace · 23/07/2024 16:41

@Pastryapronsucks renal colic is just the worst. I crawled into A & E on my hands and knees!

I should have just got through the first lithotripsy session which had started to shatter the stone but couldn't bear it. Only managed a second session as the colic pain was worse

Obviously op will probably breeze through it and I hope she does - but it's always good to prepare for what could be potentially painful and hope for the best!

@Pastryapronsucks hope you are feeling better now!

@SuperBatFace thank you, will definitely be prepared. I have 2 stones on the left hand side that seem to be stuck as they have been there since April - can't pass by looking at the CT scans. Have had constant infections so I will be glad when it is all over. Still waiting to hear about my appointment. Will let you both know how I get on!
