Who do we see for DD's skin break-outs

TheCrowFlies · 19/07/2024 17:55

DD17 has hormonal break-outs on her skin. When it happens there are occasional red pimples, but more often than not her face just gets a lot (!) of little lumps. There aren't red, but they are noticeable. It seems to be related to her hormonal cycle but can't be sure. Sometimes the flare ups are also on her arms and back.
The GP will be impossible to get an appointment with, and I don't want her taking the pill, especially since about half the time, her skin is pretty much clear. I was thinking of seeing a functional doctor but it's very expensive.
Any ideas of what/how to treat, or which sort of expert we should see?
TIA

Gp can prescribe low dose antibiotic and topical gel/cream. Deferine gel is very good. I suffered all my teens with spots. I finally gave on and saw the gp at 23 and prescribed the antibiotics and gel. My face cleared really well and after a year all gone.

Thank you for your reply. This is definitely worth thinking about,

In the late 90s, I was prescribed Dianette. It's called something else these days, but it worked like a charm.

I remember the feeling of bliss that i got when I could wash my face without having any spots.
It was a first for me.

thats great, but she’s 17 so what you want is not actually relevant. What does she want?

LynetteScavo · 19/07/2024 18:50

What have you tried so far?

If I was 17 and the pill would help my acne, wild horses wouldn’t stop me!

What worked for me was taking evening primrose oil and that balanced my hormones and cleared my skin.
Borage or starflower oil is also high in g.l.a the active ingredient.
Worth a try before hitting the harder stuff.

The only thing that has worked for my teen son is antibiotics from the GP. They take acne very seriously as they know how much impact it has on self esteem. If it helps, in my GP practice, a nurse prescribed them which might make it easier to get an appointment

NerrSnerr · 19/07/2024 19:08

The best bet would be to see the GO. Has she/ have you tried to get an appointment or are you assuming? Also at 17 it needs to be her decision. Of course you can offer guidance but if she wants to take the pill that her her choice.

LynetteScavo · 19/07/2024 20:23

I read in MN GPs suggest trying Acnicide first before prescribing (this wasn't my experience) but I tried it on one of my DC with great successes.

My friend stopped her DS consuming all sugar, which she said worked.

I would persevere with the GP appointment as the first stop. It's free and you don't have to use what is prescribed.

My DM told my GP when I was 15 she didn't want me going on the pill for bad periods. She'd rather I fainted in pain once a month. I think a sensible discussion with the GP would be a good first step.

Blushingm · 19/07/2024 20:26

Dd had lymecycline from the gp it's an antibiotic and peroxide gel

ToriMJ · 19/07/2024 20:37

Saw the gp and the first thing they prescribed was Acnecide cream- you can buy this is Asda for £10.

Iamthemoom · 19/07/2024 20:47

We have tried everything with DD's skin and finally found something to help. Within 2 weeks her skin was clear and looks amazing.

She's taking DIM and Chlorella supplements and it's transformed her skin. We use Kiki Health chlorella tablets (6 a day) and I think the Dim is 'natures path'. The combination balances hormones.

Avoiding too much sugar definitely helps too but I can't say dd has been consistent with that.

TheCrowFlies · 19/07/2024 21:05

@LynetteScavo nothing 😬! We only spoke about it last week for the first time. She's never mentioned it to me and I didn't want her to be insulted by mentioning it. She doesn't seem overly perturbed by it tbh, but I think she'd be pleased to get it sorted.

@ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews I took dianette too (but for contraception). Wow that name was a blast from the past! I remember it affecting my mood quite badly and I never took the pill again after about age 20
@Iamthemoom and @Villagetoraiseachild thank you. These are very interesting suggestions. Thank you. I will look in to this.

Thanks for all the other suggestions. I think because we are just starting out I'm going to start with a solution which is as natural as possible, but these are very helpful suggestions. If she chooses a different path then that's up to her.

Cerave blemish face wash also highly recommended

lovemybooks · 20/07/2024 23:51

Kate Somerville eradicate daily wash. This cleanser has sulphur in it to work on the oily skin . She also has a blemish control ointment . Worth looking into with all the other suggestions .
My two nieces took a prescribed medication from GP and it cleared their acne up completely, however they had to have regular check ups to rule out pregnancy .

Have you tried treating it for fungal infection? It won’t do any harm and if it does turn out to be fungal acne it will get rid of it. I was at a loss with my son’s skin as nothing we tried had the slightest effect. Turned out it was fungal and the lots of little lumps suggests it might be that (although don’t know if it would get worse depending upon her menstrual cycle).

To see if it’s fungal, but some athletes foot cream (Daktarin) and rub it onto the affected skin. You should see a big difference within a few days if it is fungal.

If there is a Nurse Practitioner at your GP surgery they will help
