Dislocated shoulder recovery time

Perplexed20 · 18/07/2024 18:13

I dislocated and fractured my shoulder at the end of May. It was generally going well but this week has been particularly difficult (possibly because the previous 2 weeks were a holiday). I've managed to carry on working throughout but I'm really struggling with both pain (which I try and ignore) and fed up ness. I can't drive at the moment and local doctors physio has said they won't see me so have to refer myself to the hospital and try and work out our v infrequent bus timetable - so that's potentially part of my fed up ness.

Anyone been through this and how long did it take?

You poor thing!
Are you not under your fracture clinic if had a fracture? Did they offer you no physio at all?
I dislocated and badly fractured my shoulder in Jan 23 and had physio for 5-6 months- it was brutal! Proper manipulation and muscle release at each of the later sessions.
Physio said to allow 18 months for max recovery providing exercises kept up.
Took a good 6 months to get decent movement back but my fracture is a malunion (healed wonky!) and I am awaiting decompression surgery to release some scar tissue.
High dose cocodamol was my friend at the start, and I keep some now to take if I get a bad episode, but usually manage with just paracetamol if needed now, but at 2 months like you are I was taking quite a lot!
Mine was a nasty fracture though- top of humerus in 4 pieces and over an inch of length lost too in the crush.

I saw the fracture clinic initially and am due to see them again in about 6 weeks. I'm going to try emailing the consultant re physio, to get them to refer me. I gather if I do it, I'll be put on a waiting list and it will take months.

Fracture was too of humerus too - greater tuberosity fracture. I think I'm possibly bring a bit unrealistic about what's possible. It's the living in the village bit that's difficult and work. Thanks for sharing, it's helped put it into a perspective snd some hope!

Yes, do allow yourself proper time to heal.
Any fracture takes a good 6 weeks just to heal, but the shoulder is a complicated joint and add a dislocation too it will take a long time to settle.
maybe worth asking if your GP has any direct access physios they can refer you to any quicker? It is important to keep it moving.

Thanks! This has just reminded me to try and contact the consultant and get a referral!
