Shit, DS has been sick again...

DS was taken into hospital on Thursday night with a mystery rash and vomiting - went to GPs, they sent us to A&E, eventually admitted to children's ward and given ABs and IV fluids. He was much better Friday morning so we cam home, and have just come back fro back clear.m the hospital having had his second dose of IV abs. Basically they still don't know what it was, but prob a virus of some kind. All his blood tests came back clear.

The thing is, he's just been sick again (first time siince thurs evening). The rash hasn't got any worse, he has a it of a temp but still cheerful... could the abs have caused the vomiting? Am sitting here trying not to panci - DH has gone to the wedding we were all supposed to attend this afternoon. I think I need so eone to tell me not to be a wuss...

It could be the abs - keep a close eye, and if you are concerned, contact the children's ward.

EffiePerine · 12/04/2008 15:20

He's now climbing the sofa so can't be to bad... will see how he gets on. They did say to ring/come in if he got worse again, but they seemed to be packed full today so I don't want to bother them unecessarily.

Would be fine if DH were here but he's 100 miles away!

IV ABs had dd vomiting and with dreadful diarrhoea after about 24 hours on them, recently (16 mos). Cleared up about 48 hours after they stopped them.

Hope your DS is ok fast, and glad it was 'just' a virus!

morningpaper · 12/04/2008 16:13

What abs were they?

Confused about your post - why IV a/bs? Why IV A/bs on Thursday then released on Friday then IV a/bs on Saturday? Did he have a canula in all that time?

Poor old him - but climbing furniture is a GOOD sign

EffiePerine · 12/04/2008 16:18

Not as confused as me...

he had a cannula put in for abs and fluid - we were sent home Friday afternoon and came back today for another lot of ABs. As the tests were clear, he's been discharged tho we have to keep an eye on him.

Temp still highish (need to hunt out thermometer), but he has already tried to empty the fridge and put his cup in the bin...

No idea what they were either. No mention of side-effects.

OP posts:
EffiePerine · 12/04/2008 16:20

oh and cannula is out now (thank goodness, as it was on his dominant hand and he kept bashing it into stuff)

It seems VERY ODD that they kept a canula in for all that time and didn't try him with oral antibiotics instead

Did they do a throat swab? There's a nasty strep going round...

ChocolateRockingHorse · 12/04/2008 16:23

Don't panic Effie.. puking little-uns often have a relapse on the road to recovery. They're stomachs are so sensitive when they had any kind of viral thing. And they can get into a sort ofp attern, often throwing up at a simular time each day even when much better in themselves. What's he been eating? He should be on really bland things, when he fancies eating. Hold the dairy - it's too much hard work for the digestive system (and stinky when it re-appears!!

Frequent clear (ish, squash is ok, black currant better than orange/lemon tho for staying down) fluid, little squares of toast with not much butter, a plain biscuit here and there (Rich tea fingers), plain bread sticks, mash potato for dinner, progressing to mash and beans the next day..

I have lots of experience with puke-prone children. Especially my DS1 who has the constitution of an ox now at 15 but could puke for Europe as a child and did so with every illness however mild, and every small anxiety!

EffiePerine · 12/04/2008 16:24

ears and throat clear. They put a cannula as they were worried about meningitis (I assume, the name was never actually mentioned) which would require high doses of ABs daily (met another mum with a small baby being treated for bacterial meningitis, he was on ABs once a day for 10 days and had a cannula as well).

DS is 18mo btw, so maybe easier to get meds into him.

he was sick this afternoon after macaroni cheese (I know, I know, but he hadn't been sick for over 24 hours). Will stick to toast and apples for the time being

ChocolateRockingHorse · 12/04/2008 16:28

I think it was the macaroni cheese Effie Honestly, it looks like sick before it's eaten!!

If I had made you a list of meals to avoid for a week or two, macaroni cheese would have been at the top!!!! I think you have your answer there TBH. Puke really is my forte unfortunately. (God job I wasn't an emteophobe, I'd have abandoned my kids long ago!)

EffiePerine · 12/04/2008 16:30

he has stolen an apple from the bowl and is tucking in - maybe I should let him decide from now on

OP posts:
morningpaper · 12/04/2008 16:32

Yes agree, it was the macaroni cheese

Good luck getting THAT out of the carpets

EffiePerine · 12/04/2008 16:43

On the laminate, thank goodness

Apple-tucking v good sign

dd was also canulated and brought in for 3 nights in a row (at midnight ) for ABs, as she had suspected septicaemia when first admitted. They have to give 3 lots of antibiotics, usually, because it takes that long to get blood cultures back - also, I think 2 or 3 doses of IV ABs are the minimum dose, IYSWIM.

Its horrid, Effie, I'm glad he has the line out now - and is showing an appetite

Elibean · 12/04/2008 18:22

But they DID warn us about vomiting/diarrhoea/loss of appetite as effects of ABs - I think we asked, though. Its powerful stuff, the staff nurse referred to it as 'Domestos'

EffiePerine · 12/04/2008 18:46

Well, he's now safely asleep. They didn't mention any side-effects, but TBH we didn't ask ... he was to have 3 doses of the ABs but they got the blood culture results back today so no need.

Really hope we never have to do that again. The staff were all fabulous though

How is he today Effie?
