Dangerously high blood pressure

Went to the Drs yesterday for migraines which I knew would likely be linked to high bp as it runs in the family. At its highest it was 233 / 193, I didn’t appreciate at the time how ridiculously high that was. I have been put on Amlodipine 10mg and it is now 208. I am still freaking out! Not back for another week. I’m either glued to the sofa or laid in bed worried to get my heart beating any faster. Has anyone else had this? I had an ecg there and then and blood tests. The Dr said he was happy for me to go home after ecg but must take the tablets obviously. How soon can I expect an improvement to get out of this danger zone? How much physically can I do? I wish now I had been sent to a and e as I’m just sat here listening to my heartbeat

When you go on blood pressure pills are you on them for life?

Mine seemed to have been triggered from the virus. The doctors have said it's likely I will always be on the medication now. Changes to diet and weight, etc hasn't changed anything and the doctors don't feel they would make a difference in this case anyway.

So I just take the meds each day, along with my other meds for arthritis and now HRT - the list seems to get longer each year, especially since hitting my late 4os!

I think possibly the NICE guidelines have changed as I wasn't but my dh was and his GP argued the point when she rang the hospital quoting the guidelines.

Mine was picked up at the start of 2020 so it would have been then

Not good is it?

Normally yes , because tablets don't cure the condition , they keep it in check .

Atlastsomesun · 18/07/2024 12:24

I didn't realise migranes could be a sign of high blood pressure. Mine has been nearly that high in the past and necessitated a visit to A&E, where it went even higher! A combination of pills and walking more is helping me. At least you know its something to manage now.

I had postpartum hypertension last year and at its highest was 170/100 and it took two different medications at various dosages to Bring it down to normal. The MAU wouldn’t discharge me until it was down to below 140/90.
I am very surprised the dr was not more concerned as that is very very high . I would check again and consider an and e as they would not let you leave until it was lower.
when i was researching at the time I found that beetroot is supposed to help lower bp. Either in tablet or in juice. Reduce caffeine if you drink a lot of coffee and reduce salty food. Hope it comes down soon.

Thank you all for replying. I have been in bed all afternoon with a headache again up the back of my neck /skull, Took 2x codeine, didnt touch it but taken x2 cheap aldi paracetamol and now easing. Bp is now 184/96 averaging. It did drop to 165/93 at one point though. Only had 1 tablet so far as next isnt due until 6.30pm.
Really good advice given, thank you. I think because I have a disabled daughter the Dr was trying to avoid me going to A and E??? I will go if it rises at least it is going down a bit

is that 2x amlodipine a day? Are they 5mg or 10mg?

That is a bit strange as amlodipine is a true one per day tablet with a very long serum half life.

Dogonthebed · 18/07/2024 18:08

Yes 1 per day 10mg. The painkillers I took x2 of.

Its coming down though OP.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/07/2024 18:27

When you take your BP make sure you take it 3 X with a rest in between and record the lowest reading.

Newbutoldfather · 18/07/2024 18:35

@Dogonthebed ,

If it is coming down, that is great. And the odd high reading is fine, especially when stressed, it is what our body is designed to do.

A lot of people find 10mg amlodipine unpleasant in terms of aching muscles.

Once everything is stabilised, you need to find a combination of tablets that suits you (I reduced amlodipine to 5mg, and take a smallish dose of candesartan to complement it).

I would also ask to be referred for an echocardiogram as that is a really high blood pressure and can cause damage if sustained.

Growsomeballswoman · 23/07/2024 12:16

@Dogonthebed How are you? Are you feeling any better
