Why do I keep pooing myself?

NC'ed for this. I am not the poo troll. Pombears, garlic threadworms, poo pouffe etc.

I had a bad stomach infection a few months ago. Symptoms were sulphuric burps, diarrhoea, nausea and lack of appetite for about 2 weeks. My GP took a stool sample, which came back as normal. Immodium and time sorted it out.

Since then, the sulphuric burps keep coming back, along with the odd bout of diarrhoea. Sometimes it comes on very suddenly, which has led to some embarrassing incidents where I haven't made it to a loo in time.

The burps are back today. I have a big presentation at work tomorrow. I'm not nervous about it, it's a normal part of my job, but I absolutely have to be there. I will take immodium and pack spare clothes but it's a long way to travel and 3 hours presenting and I'm worried about having another accident.

Is it worth going back to my GP? What could be wrong?

Sounds like it would be very worth going back to the GP. Also keep some imodium instants on you for days like tomorrow. They really do work super fast, the name isn't misleading.

CeruleanDive · 17/07/2024 20:57

Go back to the GP, but also have a look at starting some decent probiotics:

Thanks. Probiotics are a good idea. I'll pop them on the shopping list and send my GP and e-consult.

Maybe do a water fast day if you can. Totally clear your gut.

As in only water not no water!

thedendrochronologist · 17/07/2024 21:11

Do you know what the stomach infection was?

I had giardia and it was awful!

TheShiningCarpet · 17/07/2024 21:11

You should have mutiple stool tests to check for poo disease - so ask for additional tests spaced apart and make sure they test for gardia

HipHopanonymous · 17/07/2024 21:12

I used to get bouts of that - 2 to 3 times a year. Don't want to jinx it but, I never had it again (6 years so far) after I had my gallbladder out.

But I still can't eat eggs even now, so afraid I'll get that taste!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 17/07/2024 21:12

Don't know what to suggest medically, but for the presentation, get some tena knickers to protect your clothes.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 17/07/2024 21:13

I would buy some incontinence pants or pads.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 17/07/2024 21:13

I second about Imodium instants. They’re really good

bonzaitree · 17/07/2024 21:13

I’m so sorry OP. Yes defo go back to the GP. Usually good if you give them dates and times of eruptions so they take you seriously.

For tomorrow- Immodium, spare clothes, copious amounts of baby wipes, deodorant. Night time sanitary towel strategically placed.

Don’t worry, even Beyoncé has shat her knickers. We all do it.

“Poo disease” 🤣 is that the medical term?

Freshair87 · 17/07/2024 21:15

Not that helpful as I can't remember the advice but I watched a series on channel 4 (I think) called know your shit which was all about people with various gut health issues and there was a woman really suffering with sulphur burps, so I'd try and look that up as they seemed to fix her problem (think was all to do with the bacteria in her stomach so probiotics are a good shout)

Blackcats7 · 17/07/2024 21:15

Have you tried restricting foods to try to see if anything you eat is causing this?
I became lactose intolerant in middle age so things can suddenly affect you which you had previously had no trouble with.

bubbletubble · 17/07/2024 21:17

Sorry to hijack the thread, but can anyone recommend any good probiotics for sulphur burps? I suffer from these and they are sooooo embarrassing.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 17/07/2024 21:18

You could also try unpasteurized sauerkraut but start with tiny (a teaspoon) amounts and build up.

This is the nicest I've found

Sounds like giardi ( the sulphuric burps). I had it a long time ago and it would flare up suddenly for about a year or after.
Pribiotics are probably the best remedy and if you can stomach it some food grade diamateous earth (kaolin) - this stuff is amazing for all stomach problems . . .
anyone remember kaolin and morphine?

TheGirlattheBack · 17/07/2024 21:21

Definitely go back to your GP. They should test you for H.pylori and coeliac disease.

longdistanceclaraclara · 17/07/2024 21:23

Sounds like giardia

BobbyBiscuits · 17/07/2024 21:25

I think kefir yoghurt is good for probiotics in the gut? The drink one in cherry flavour is really nice.
Just this once for the event, could you take a codeine based painkiller? They basically give you constipation but that works to your advantage if you've a loose bowel.
I'd also look at your diet? Have You noticed it flares up after certain foods?
Deffo go back to GP.
I'm sure you'll be fine in the presentation, just be prepared.

Stuckinarut79 · 17/07/2024 21:30

I used to get this off and on and had some awful accidents, I realised it was much better when I wasn’t on dairy I switched milks and watch how much cheese/yogurts I have- I’m ok with a bit. If I over do it I get a bit loose or a quick dash but nothing like the out of nowhere , explosions I had. Maybe try a bit of food elimination to see if diet is effecting it at all?

I too have become lactose intolerant in middle age

soupfiend · 17/07/2024 21:32

C diff as well can cause some of this

tara66 · 17/07/2024 21:38

You may have developed sensitivity to some foods. I get the runs if I eat any brazil nuts for example - whereas years ago I could eat them without any problem. They are sometimes put in muesli.
