9 month old always constipated

Hello, my 9 month old seems to be in terrible pain every time he had a bowl movement, it’s been going on months now and I don’t seem to be getting help from my doctor.
when he was a newborn he had very lose bowels and we used lactose free milk which seemed to help. We then moved on to regular formula but once we started to introduce solids his bowel movements became more solid. I’ve restricted the amount of bread and potato he has and use soy milk and yoghurts and plenty of fruit. Now we seem to be in a cycle of a he goes for a semi soft poo then doesn’t go the next day and it builds up.

any one been through this before? Or have any idea how to resolve it?

Hi
has your gp recommended soy? My understanding is that it can play havoc with infants digestion and can lead to constipation.

Apileofballyhoo · 12/07/2024 20:13

Is he growing ok? What veg does he eat and how much other dietary fibre?

I'd get him checked for impaction. Sometimes the softer stool can make its way out past a blocked up area.

Cinocino · 12/07/2024 20:15

How much water is he having in a day?

GailPlattsDeadHusband · 12/07/2024 20:18

Ella's kitchen prune pouches worked best for both my kids

Do not let this slide, we got fobbed off over months and months and months when this happened to our son. He now has completely chronic constipation and loss of muscle tone in his bowel. He's on the mend now but we're a year into a 2 year treatment of movicol laxative

YellowHatt · 12/07/2024 20:24

Are you keeping a food diary? Can you share it here? Maybe there are little changes you could make that might help.

leeverarch · 12/07/2024 20:33

Lots of pureed fruit - prunes, apricots, pears etc.

Ckennedy · 12/07/2024 20:41

@showmethegin omg! Sounds awful. Did they say what was causing the constipation?

@FTMaz no not recommended by doctor. I had heard some babies don’t react well to cows milk so switched the soy for his cereal but then I found out that babies can also have a soy milk allergy but I’m too scared to change in case it makes things worse

This. Go back and see another doctor. Don’t get fobbed off. This needs to be treated.

CharmingGeorge · 12/07/2024 20:49

Another vote for Ella’s kitchen prunes

This is just my personal choice but I would go with almond milk (unless nut allergy of course) soy is known to cause digestive issues…it actually does with me as adult. Almond milk is what my cousin used with her little girl but I would check with the gp x

@Cinocino about 4 oz of water per day

4oz is really on the lower end for this stage of weaning, particularly if he’s taken well to solids.
Dehydration is hugely linked to constipation so I would try and get him drinking double with the addition of the P fruit purées, prune, pear etc before trying any sort of GP solution.

endofthelinefinally · 12/07/2024 20:57

Prunes, porridge and NOT weetabix. Plenty of fluids. Google how to do abdominal massage for constipation.

endofthelinefinally · 12/07/2024 20:59

Stewed fruit and cooked carrots are better than raw as they produce a softer stool.

When you say cereal do you mean wheetabix? That’s the culprit I’d bet.

Stop the cereal completely for a couple of weeks (it’s not a great breakfast anyway) and see if it makes a difference.

My little one is on soya and it really can cause constipation. If your little one is still having that much pain I'd imagine he's probably sensitive to the soya aswell. Maybe try him with a coconut milk or oat yoghurt.
