GP scheduled appointment after iron blood test

Looking for some advice on what other tests might be done alongside haemoglobin at the GP...

Basically, I went for a blood test yesterday at GP after being told my haemoglobin was too low when I tried to donate blood a couple of weeks ago. GP texted back today to say that haemoglobin was normal but they would schedule an appointment to "discuss your other blood tests".

Bit puzzled, what else could they have been testing for at the same time? Appointment isn't for 9 days but receptionist didn't have access to my results when I booked the appointment... Any ideas what else might be tested alongside haemoglobin?

They usually do a full blood count don't they?

PastaFasool · 09/07/2024 21:18

@gamerchickI have absolutely no idea! What does a full blood count mean...? I am slightly nervous but I guess if it was urgent they would have me back in sooner?

Although the blood nurse did say results would take a week but they have scheduled an appointment after 24 hours...

I’ve been called back a couple of times. I have a history of cancer so naturally I panicked both times.

First time, it was because I did the blood test after a weekend of heavy drinking. I rarely drink but it was a hen weekend and I drunk enough for it to flag on my blood test!

Second time, I was deficient in vitamin D.

Neither were urgent, but both consisted of a call from the surgery saying the GP wants to see me to discuss my blood test.

So it could be anything!

Could be vitamin B12 or folate - both very treatable. If they were concerned I think they would at least try to get you in sooner than 12 days.

If you have the NHS app and apply to see your note you'll be able to see results on there

PastaFasool · 09/07/2024 21:33

@ClimbingMounjaro oh that's a great suggestion - person taking bloods did say that I could download the NHS app for results. Thank you so much for reminding me.

Probably folate or B12. Agree. Look on nhs app under test results.

Thanks all for the suggestion to download the app. I've done that and accessed my test results - apparently it's low serum ferritin (20 ug/L). So sounds like it's all iron related.
