I don't like long rambling posts but I do like a bit of context.

You do realise we can see the original unedited version too?

One smalling if Haribo a week is not going to cause problems 🙄

You’ve edited this to just say ‘no’ on your op btw.

But to answer your question, in my opinion if you demonise sugar kids go to wild lengths to get it. All kids have a sweet tooth, it’s a hangover from how sweet breastmilk is!

For me it was very important to never ever have good food and bad food. All food is food and nothing in our house is off limits. What I do teach Dd is that some foods have more things in them that help us grow and get stronger and feed our cells etc. so using science rather than emotive languages.

I have a ‘candy’ drawer that Dd can help herself to pretty much whenever she wants. But because it’s never been off limits and she knows that yes even if it’s 5 minutes before dinner she can have a gummy bear, she’s never gone wild for it.

I also have fruit/veg/nuts etc freely available and more often than not she’ll want pecans over chocolate.

If you make something taboo kids want it. So no I don’t think having sweets at school is a bad thing.

It’s not weekly here but when DD gets something like that from her teacher or a classmate for their birthday I let her enjoy it as I’m confident the rest of her diet is pretty good and I’m aiming for balance and moderation.

Hohofortherobbers · 09/07/2024 20:19

Oh you can tell the sugar deprived dc a mile off at a party. They go mental for the sweets, whereas the ones who have parents with an everything in moderation attitude can take it or leave it.

We generally have a very low UPF diet at home (home cooking, super careful with labels, make our own bread, just eat plain Greek yoghurt but with honey) so this allows me to happily say yes to a small bag of sweets a week and generally be less concerned outside the house.

Let them enjoy sweets. Ensure they have 3 healthy meals a day, and don't stress about little extras now and then. Life's too short.
