Tongue-tie and pronouncing R's

Nanoon · 10/04/2008 22:37

My DS2 is tongue-tied which was only noticed when he was 9wks . I understand that not all people who are tongue tied have speech problems but for those that do, what is the chance of them having problems prnouncing their R's?

Thanks

My son has a mild tongue tie and can't say his r's properly.
He has had speech therapy for it and now we just have to keep working on it. It is very hard for him but he can do it when we really try with it.
He is 10, he was 2 when his tongue problem was noticed.

oh god! DS2 name begins with R and i'm feeling a tadded worried about it. Stupidl it only occured to me today that he might have a problem with it but i guess there wasn't anything that i could have done as he was 9 weeks when i noticed!

How do you know when a tongue tie is mild or otherwise. HV and GP just looked an said 'oh yes he's tt'. The little bit of skin is right at the tip of his toungue but it is about 1 - 2 cm long so there is some movement there.

Thanks

how do you know if a child is tongue tied my ds 2.8 can talk very well no problems with r`s but ive noticed he cant seem to say s very well he draws the letter out and has become a bit dribbly the more he talks and i dont know if he has a lisp or is still only learning he is getting better as he goes on but my gran mentioned tongue tied

Nanoon · 10/04/2008 23:04

the bit of skin that joins the tongue to the base of the mouth (can't think of offical name!) is short or near the front of the tongue. Mt sons is right near the tip so it makes him look abit fork tongued.

I got my son's hearing assessed when he was 2 because he was not talking. The woman who did it noticed, i had no idea. He was seen by a consultant at hospital who looked and said he would not operate at that age at it would mean a GA but if a speech therapist ever said he needed it i could happen then.

The SALTs he has seen since has not been that worried about it.

There was no connection between tongue tie and late speech by the way. All three of my boys have been late talkers and the other two have no problems with their tongues. The eldset two are very articulate now. The youngest one is nearly two and only making animal noises so not sure what he will be like!

It is the remulum,Nanoon, well that spelling does not look right, but something like that.

Nanoon · 10/04/2008 23:11

my eldest is 3.6 and is very articulate so i gess i'll just have to see how things pan out. Poor little chap though if he can't even pronounce is own name .

I ws told that they wouldn't correct it as it means a GA and if he had probs and speech therapist would be the first move.

oh well, off to bed to worry about it now .

Hopefully others with experience will post tomorrow.

thanks

We suspect our 3 year old has mild tongue tie - I only noticed about 6 months ago. I posted a thread on here earlier today. He has prblems with s and l particularly.
