I've been running 5k 3 times a week and lost no bloomin weight...........

whomovedmychocolate · 10/04/2008 21:23

Okay, so it depends how much you weigh and how fit you are already.

If you jog for 30 minutes you probably will burn about 300 calories which will be wiped out with a 'couple of treats' but your metabolism will take on another 30% of that in terms of burn so another 90 calories. Providing you stay eating the same, you'd take about a month to lose a pound.

But what will happen if you exercise regularly is that your fat will turn to muscle. This will increase the amount of calories you burn at rest - by about a third, which means if you eat the same, you will start to lose more weight.

Personally by exercising three times a week, even with eating the same, I lose about three pounds a week for four weeks then equalise because I gain muscle which weighs more than the fat I've lost.

So, it's worth it, but it may not show up so much on the scales as in your clothes.

hercules1 · 10/04/2008 22:19

A pound a week So to make it worthwhile I need to keep it up. That's okay. I am really enjoying it. I am 11 stone and want to get to 10 stone so I will fit comfortably into my clothes.

So, if I eat roughly 2000 cals a day but jog for 1/2 an hour each day I will defintely feel it in my clothes and lose a stone eventually.

should be a ? at the end of the last post.

Just bumping myself!

If you eat 2000 calories a day you will probably lose a bit more than 1lb a week. Initially in the first four weeks you'll probably lose about six pounds. The last five pounds is hard but it will go if you keep at it

hercules1 · 11/04/2008 08:54

Thanks for the messages. I have been inspired to cut down on my calories as dont want to be doing the jogging and losing so slowly. After only 4 days jogging I feel firmer, fitter and really looking forward to putting the mp3 player on and going for another jog!

So, if I have say 1500 calories a day then I guess the jogging would lose me 100 or so of these but increase my metabolism so that eventually according to you lot I should lose even more as my metabolism increases.

Oops sorry just reread earlier message. So I should lose 300 or so then an extra 90.

Cut out the treats and eat three balanced meals only.

Or else (not so healthy, but works for some) substitute one meal (probably lunch) with a treat.

You can lose weight much more quickly by cutting down on unhealthy food than by exercising.

hercules1 · 11/04/2008 11:09

THanks Anna. I lost a lot of weightlast yaer purely by dieting - 31/2 stone and thought to lose this stone I'd try to do it by exercise. Obviously not quite so simple. Argh, so hard to give up lots of nice food.

Anna8888 · 11/04/2008 11:19

You are not seriously overweight, so it will be harder (and hungrier) to lose those last few pounds...

Exercise is always good for tone, but why don't you try yoga or pilates rather than jogging? Much less strenuous and quicker results I think. I haven't tried myself but keep looking at friends/cousin/sister who do pilates and think I MUST DO THIS TOO

Louandben · 11/04/2008 11:31

I have to disagree with losing weight faster with pilates or yoga, while they get fantastic toning results they just won't burn calories like running will. Good luck with it, exercise will get you into much better shape than just dieting and you will also feel much better for it. You may well find you don't need to lose a whole stone to get to the size and shape you want.

Anna8888 · 11/04/2008 11:35

Louandben - reread my post, yoga and pilates is suggested for tone not weightloss.

OrmIrian · 11/04/2008 11:37

DOn't know about weight. But I've been running more seriously since about Novemeber and went down a dress size by February.

castille · 11/04/2008 11:40

My sister, who battles a bit with her weight, runs quite a lot (in phases). When she was training for a marathon she found that she lost almost no weight but looked heaps better and went down a couple of dress sizes. Remember muscle weighs more than fat.

herc - could you manage 40 mins or longer but have a couple of days rest/power walk/swim/pilates/cycling/whatever. You might find that by exercising for slightly longer in any one session that you lose weight a little quicker. And adding other things helps the boredom.

hercules1 · 12/04/2008 08:49

Yes, 40 minutes is doable and could easily alternate between cycling and jogging although not so keen on cycling on the roads around here and I like to listen to music whilst jogging. WOuldnt risk it whilst cycling. Had a break yesterday and still feel really good.

I'm very fit, an ex-endurance athlete and regular cyclist.

I had also put on a load of weight without noticing, due to life changes.

The GI diet helped me to lose 7kg earlier this year without really noticing. I'm slimmer and happier than I've been for years. Give it a go, it's entirely compatible with exercising and leading a normal life, it's not faddy or extreme, and it works.

And don't forget to have one day off exercise a week. Otherwise you'll not recover and run the risk of injury and illness. Muscle gets stronger when resting.

I'd also do some weights one day a week instead of running.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 12/04/2008 08:56

I'm doing a mix of cycling/jogging/classes at the moment. My weight is a bit static (I could do with losing half a stone) but that's because I can't kick the booze. And also because I'm inconsistent. Last week I did run/cycle/cycle/run/rest/class/rest. This week I've run - once -

I don't do cycling on the roads either; way too dangerous. I have immediate access to a good 10 miles of canalside cycle path though and have no excuse.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 12/04/2008 09:00

Life changes yes. My weight gain is sadly due to middle age despite me doing what I've always done diet and exercise wise. It's just crept on. I need to take myself to task and hence should really get out of bed and go for a run.
