or do they just heal on their own?

They get strapped to adjacent toes.

whomovedmychocolate · 10/04/2008 21:03

Well in my case they encased the entire foot in plaster for six weeks. Because they wouldn't fix straight otherwise I don't think.

Fingers they do just strap together but your toe joints are quite easy to misalign if they are broken.

Do you think you have broken them? There will be massive swelling if they are broken, mine were about three times bigger than normal and bright blue.

southeastastra · 10/04/2008 21:07

it's not really a funny colour, but a bit swollen, it's the bottom of the toe iykwim

i did it last thursday so i thought it would be better by now, it's still hard to walk on.

Sounds bruised then. Can you bend it at all?

If you have swelling on the toepad perhaps you have something in it - how did you injure it?

LordGodAlmighty · 10/04/2008 21:21

I broke my little toe just before Christmas. There was not a lot to be done about it. It swelled up and my whole foot was black and blue for a couple of days and the toe was very painful for about six weeks. The swelling went down gradually but it was some weeks before I could wear most of my shoes.
You could get it strapped but not sure it would help much and would make it bulkier thus exacerabating shoe problem.

southeastastra · 10/04/2008 21:25

yes i can bend it, just hurts when i walk. i stubbed it on a sticking out toy. it brusied alot by the base of the toe. i'll try taping it to the other toe.

Try elevating it as much as you can, that will reduce the swelling. A cold compress will probably help you too. Don't tape it too tightly.

Bloody toys on the floor, I've done it myself. Lego in particular is the devil's own Scholl sandal!

zippitippitoes · 10/04/2008 21:35

LordGodAlmighty · 10/04/2008 21:35

I did mine tripping over the hoover. I have now given up housework and feel much safer.

southeastastra · 10/04/2008 21:38

serves me right for not wearing slippers

I did it to one of mine and it was weeks before I could walk on it properly again. It's a part of your body that takes a lot of punishment, your whole weight at each step, particularly if it's the bottom of your toe; that's why it can take a long time to get better. Poor you.

whomovedmychocolate · 10/04/2008 21:42

Are you kidding - do you know how many thousand accidents are caused by slippers per year?

whomovedmychocolate · 10/04/2008 21:43

This'll cheer you up - a slipper amnesty www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/02/16/nslippers116.xml

LaComtesse · 10/04/2008 21:55

I'm not sure but get it checked out - you may have to have an x-ray. I've broken the bone of both my lttle toes but not at the same time! I had to wear a glamorous tubey-grip for a few weeks. After the initial pain went, it was ok. Now I'm older I do get twinges in my feet if I've walked lots though .

southeastastra · 10/04/2008 22:24

i'll see the dr, it just doesn't seem right.

when i'm a pensioner it'll come back to haunt me

Most of us will have gripes and twinges in our dotage . Do get it checked out though.
