My hearing seems to be deteriorating fast - mid fifties - can anyone suggest anything other than hearing aids. I am willing to try ANYTHING. Thank you

I felt the same way as you re hearing aids.
However, now I have them, I wonder why I didn't do it sooner. They're incredibly discreet, can Bluetooth to my phone, have a restaurant setting (to help screen out background noise in busy social settings) etc etc. Plus I'm now eligible for a disabled persons railcard.
I didn't take the whole transition well - felt I was old, had "failed" etc - but got over that fairly quickly.
The clincher for me was that they can help stave off dementia.
There is a hearing loss board on MN. You may get more help there.
Good luck!

Have you had your ears checked for wax?

Assuming it's not wax or inner ear infection related, there's little to be done if hearing is deteriorating. Mine started to get really bad in my 30s, I had meningitis at 26 and hearing came back very slowly and was never the same again. I resisted everything hearing aid related and struggled through life, work and social situations through bloody pride!

However, in my late 50s for the sake of my friends, family and colleagues I bit the bullet. OMG my life has been totally transformed as has that of everyone who interracts with me. It is such a pleasure now to listen to the TV, and (like a pp,) audiobooks, the radio and youtube through my tablet or phone which is bluetooth connected to the hearing aids. Being able to follow and join in conversations is now one of life's great pleasures, it wasn't always and I burrowed into myself as a result. Not any more!

I honestly do not know how I managed all those years, but now.... I don't give them a second thought and I wear them with absolute pride. I wear my hair up most of the time so they are not hidden. But no one cares do they, least of all me!

Please go and get a hearing test, privately if necessary and they will recommend the best course of action. If you do pay for them yourself to get sorted quickly, it will be the best investment in your well being that you will make. I guarantee it.
