Impetigo - How Contagious?

DS has this. He started antibiotics this morning. How contagious is it and how long will he be contagious? It's just he has 2 birthday parties next week and he's worried he won't get to go. Obviously if he's still infectious, I'll keep him at home but he'll be really upset. He's not back at school for another week and a bit so should I inform them as well when the holidays are over.

Thanks

Dd1 recently had this and the I read on the net that they were no longer contagious once they had been using the antibiotics for 48hrs.

However, my gp told me that dd could go back to school right away so long as she was applying the cream every few hours and was careful about hygiene.

The school secretary was not impressed with what my gp said, and told me dd couldn't go back, but the head overruled her and said it was fine.

Doc only gave him oral antibios and told us to put E45 on the sores. Should I maybe use something with Tea Tree in it for a wee antiseptic touch?

I got antiobiotic cream for dd1 and it cleared up within 24 hours!

Incredibly.

Be scrupulous about him using his own flannel and towel etc.

Don't know about nowadays but impetigo was once on the notibiable illness list for schools and was monitored.

Lotstodo · 11/04/2008 08:00

That was notifiable!

He should have been using the antibiotics for almost 5 days by the time he has his first party. Is he likely to be still contagious then? I've replaced his duvet and pillow and he has his own towels and flannel. The scabby bit looks a bit better from yesterday, it might be drying out a little.
