Pneumonia

Morning everyone

I was knocked down with pneumonia on Friday 21st June. An ambulance was sent and I was admitted to hospital in a pretty bad way. Heart rate was 130-150, fever 40.6, bp 150/120, oxygen between 69-73. Doctors have said I was lucky I arrived when I did. I have had 2 different iv antibiotics, magnesium, potassium and oral antibiotics. As well as other pain relief. I was discharged after 5 days. My infection markers were at 233, iron levels down at 100.

I have been back in hospital this week due to lack of improvement. It has kickstarted asthma attacks. I am 5 days into steroids, I had a nebuliser, oxygen and more iv magnesium. I'm on a steroid inhaler.

I'm having a check up today at my doctors surgery. My breathing is a bit better since steroids and oxygen is between 91-94. I just have no energy, the tiredness is extreme, I'm hardly out of bed. I am taking iron drink sachets.

Any tips or advice? The consultant said recovery is 4-6 weeks. I was just hoping I would be feeling a little better. It's been tough on us as a family. My husband has been brilliant and his work have been really supportive too.

Sorry you have been so unwell. It can take a couple of months for some people. The tiredness can last a month, even if people have begun to feel well in general. It knocked DH for around 3 months, but he had spent nearly 2 weeks in hospital on oxygen before discharge, and could then barely get out of the chair for another couple of weeks once home. He improved very slowly but got there eventually.

I’m curious why the worry over your iron levels though. My GP doesn’t even raise an eyebrow when mine are 20, even though I can barely get through the day! They were 24 last test, even though I’m on prescription ferrous fumerate.

It will just take time, your body has been through a lot, and recovery takes energy. I hope you feel better soon.Flowers

Thank you for the replies, i had a check up with the asthma nurse. She wasn't happy with my breathing. They blue lighted me back into hospital, I don't remember the appointment as I became unconscious. I ended up back in hospital for a week on different iv antibiotics and fluid. Then nebulisers 4 times a day. My blood results were all over the place still. They think my lungs reacted badly to partially treated pneumonia and it caused several asthma attacks.

I have just had a check up with the gp and they have said due to all the complications it will more likely be 3-4 months recovery.

How are you doing @Louu247

It took me a year to get over a bad case of pneumonia. And I was 22 years old. I think you need to mentally prepared for a long haul. Not much consolation I know. However that has been my reality, I had different health issues coming up following pneumonia

Thank you for sharing. I think this is what I will be up against. It's frustrating but I know I need to rest so I can get better for my children. My older two have been Struggling and are really worried. The school have been brilliant with them both and are providing additional support for them. It's just a case of resting and time.

Hope you are better now x

I did get better with medication, rest and time. That was almost 30 years ago. I have to say I go to the doctor promptly now. Wishing you the best recovery, you absolutely must rest and take it easy
