3 week old with nappy rash so bad his bottom is bleeding...

Changing his nappy and having to listen to him scream through his pooing time is breaking my heart. My 3 week old has the worst nappy rash. He is exclusively breast fed and doing regular, yellow, runny poos which HV and MW said they thought was normal.

As a result, his bottom got very very red and now is red raw. They said sudocreme was good as anything but it hasnt worked and his bottom is now bleeding from a few little areas that look skinned and spotty. His whole bottom is bright red and he screams blue murder when you go near his nappy - understandably. Poor wee guy. It makes me want to cry when I look at it.

I have just started to put metanium on it but am really worried because I have never seen nappy rash bleed like this before - I am a 1st time mum though so haven't really had experience changing newborn nappies so dont know what is "normal" in this case...

Help me please please please!!!

My Ds had seemed to have problems with sudocreme.
Found no nappy was the best trick.

No nappie as often as poss is ideal, but not practical. I had a similar prob with my ds and my MIL bought be some cream from mothercare called kamilisan( I think). It was brilliant.

I second the egg white for sealing and healing raw areas.

I can't recommend it enough!!

How often is he pooing MrsC? I ask because my dd seemed to poo all the time, and had horrendous nappy rash for weeks like you describe. It turned out to be a symptom of her milk intolerance. I gave up eating dairy, and it went away, and has never come back.

I did try most of the things suggested on here first, including weeks of assorted thrush treatments from my GP, but none of them made a jot of difference.

DS and DD2 got bad nappy rash, i found when it started to bleed that the only thing that really worked was savlon. i know its not a nappy cream but its an antiseptic with something in ti which aids healing better than anything I know. DD1 never really had any problems, it must just be individual sensitivity definitley nothing you've done. Don't worry its just one of those things but its hard to watch them be so sore.

DS has had gastroentritis twice and suffered really bad from bleeding both times. I tried lots of creams and would recommend metanium every time. Brilliant stuff.

MrsCravendale · 11/04/2008 10:23

Am persisting with the metanium - and applying it as thinly as you can with a wriggly, kicky newborn. He seems a bit happier and have just been using water as recommended to clean him. He is happily nappyless as I type and freely peeing and pooping away on my towel selection.

If theres no improvement I will def be off to th docs with him.

As for the dairy issue - I had some cheese and have been trying to up my milk intake since I am finding it hard to get time to eat so maybe that is a problem. No harm in cutting it out to see if it helps.

Thank you all a zillion for the advice and for the support... i did feel i had done something wrong that may have caused his rash to get so bad.

Good to hear he's happy you are doing a great job!

MerlinsBeard · 11/04/2008 21:46

glad to hear he is happier

sounds like you are doing everything you can for him

DS2 had this for a very very long time. I gave up feeding him myself because he was so screamy and his bottom was exactly like you described but got to be much much worse. We went back and forth to HV and GP but no help AT ALL. It turns out he is dairy intolerant (which the DRs still refuse to believe despite him being comepletely different now he has soya things ). If i had known that i could have solved it and carried on feeding him. The poor boy was bleeding until he was 2! he ended up with poo phobia and constipation/diarroheao (sp?)

Sorry have rambled a bit
i think that may have been buried for a while!
