Owwwww! Anyone know what's good for dental pain?

Apart from seeing a dentist - mine doesn't have any appointments before tomorrow at 12.15?

I think the cap on one of my incisors must have an invisible crack or something.. Searing pain there and Panadol Plus really isn't helping (or maybe I'd be in even more agony without it, who knows?).

Have had sore gums all week but thought it was just not enough vit C, made a routine appointment but it wasn't until next week. Real pain has only started today. Owwww!

Short of getting dh to knock me out (which I am seriously considering) is there anything I can do? Would be v. grateful for suggestions.

sipping cold water or does cold make it hurt more?? otherwise hot water bottle against your mouth?

thefunkypea · 10/04/2008 14:47

Oil of cloves on a piece of cotton wool inserted next to the gum?

nailpolish · 10/04/2008 14:47

ibuprofen is better for toothache

Amapoleon · 10/04/2008 14:48

I use whiskey, slosh it around the tooth and then spit it out or swallow it if you would rather

popsycal · 10/04/2008 14:48

solpadeine is meant to be good

GreatAuntieWurly · 10/04/2008 14:48

oil of clove is awful, it always made the pain worse when it wears off.

southeastastra · 10/04/2008 14:48

nurofen with ibuprofen and codeine is good, along with paracetamol.

also rinse with hot salty water.

could you see the dentist or doc in the meantime for anti biocs?

goingfor3 · 10/04/2008 14:49

Nuerofen is fab for servre toothache.

Amapoleon · 10/04/2008 14:49

Oops just realised how crude that sounded, I meant drink the whiskey if you feel like getting piddled.

nailpolish · 10/04/2008 14:49

you should have an out of hours dentist at your local hospital for emergencies

OverMyDeadBody · 10/04/2008 14:49

I recommend ibuprofen, whiskey and clove oil (you can get it from boots)

edam · 10/04/2008 14:50

thank you! Will ask dh to fetch solpadeine/whiskey/oil of cloves. Having staggered home from work I'm not going out again... ow ow ow ow ow

If you don't have any oil of cloves just holding a real clove in your mouth against your tooth will help.
I'm that you can get to see your dentist so soon. My tooth broke in half and couldn't get an appointmant for 6 months.
Hope it feels easier soon.

GreatAuntieWurly · 10/04/2008 14:50

ring NHS direct they can give you out of hours emergency dentist.

luckylady74 · 10/04/2008 14:51

I made an emergengy gp appointment and was given codeine plus slow release ibruprophen for night - all pain gone -lovely gp!

edam · 10/04/2008 14:53

I broke my tooth in half, that's why I've got a cap! So I do sympathise. At the time couldn't get an appointment for two whole days at my own dentist so had to go private for emergency treatment. Think it's that cap that is the problem.

thank you, you are all lovely, feeling slightly less woebegone now I have some info.

Pain is clearly affecting my brain, I did know oil of cloves is good for toothache. Doh...

We recommend Nurofen Plus, at the dentist where I work!

edam · 10/04/2008 22:43

Well, oil of cloves, nurofen and a little whiskey have made me a much happier bunny, thank you everyone!

(I don't even like bloody whiskey but it took away the taste of oil of cloves. Stupidly managed to get some on my tongue. Really stings, that stuff. But at least it made a change for my tongue to hurt, not my tooth...)

Update in case any one of you very lovely people is interested.... dentist says he thinks the nerve has died and I'm going to need root canal surgery. Yikes! But the swine wouldn't do anything today, wants me to take anti-bs for a week first. Sigh... I'm sure anti-bs will help but I soooo wanted him just to take the damn cap off there and then.

And the moral of this story is, make your dh/dp/someone else hoover the bloody stairs. OR if you are forced to do it, work UP from the bottom, not the other way round.

Did you get any better painkillers?

southeastastra · 11/04/2008 15:20

poor you at least you have anti-biotics

edam · 11/04/2008 18:24

I'm alternating ibuprofen/paracetamol

HereComeTheGirls · 11/04/2008 21:37

You need some codeine..get some Nurofen Plus tomorrow if pain is still bad..which hopefully it won't be when the antibs start working

oggsfrog · 13/04/2008 09:39

Now I'm curious... did the hoover fall on your head?
