Body won't work when I stand up and walk

I've noticed that more and more I'm really struggling to get up from sitting and I can't walk for pain. I do eventually get walking but that's painful too each time I walk. I now dread having to walk far.

I am overweight so it might be that but I've been overweight for some time and been active before this.

Has anyone ever had similar?

myMiL had this problem, she had to rock backwards and forwards for a while before launching herself from the low soft cushioned sofa, then staggered about for a while, not being able to stand straight yet.
My husband bought her a solid sofa (from Ikea) which was higher, with a solid front, this helped tremendously, gave her a spring up.
She was also about 2stone overweight, 5’4” and pretty solid herself.
Or an ejector seat, do not place in front of a fire or window.

I would make a GP appointment, OP.

It would be a good idea to find out what's causing this and get it treated.

Not moving is not good for your body.

Fraaahnces · 02/07/2024 14:18

@ElTortilla You need to see a GP and the very first thing you need to do is express that you do not want to have what you are about to say dismissed due to your weight. All too often doctors will see an overweight patient and refuse to look any further.

Summerfreezemakesmedrinkwine · 02/07/2024 14:22

Why would you discount weight at the outset @Fraaahnces ? Being overweight has deleterious effects over time.

Recuperation7 · 02/07/2024 14:35

I am not an HCP but you obviously need to get this checked at the GP op in case it is neurological or you have some inflammatory or autoimmune disease.

Illness aside, one thing I am hearing experts say on health and fitness podcasts now is that your thigh muscles are thought of as one the most important organs in your body after heart and lungs as they give you balance and allow you to go from sitting to standing.

This becomes harder as we age and lose muscle lass. The solution is exercise, weight training and flexibility. And weight loss I'm afraid.

I need to do all of the above! I've started with regular daily walking then going up and down stairs and doing squats first without, then with, a few light weights under the supervision of a PT.

@Summerfreezemakesmedrinkwine - I absolutely would not discount weight at all, it is the most likely cause, but too often overweight and obese patients have serious and/or life-threatening health symptoms overlooked because they are simply lectured about their weight.

@ElTortilla Overweight MiL would go for a pub lunch Saturday, drink beer.

All in all they had a dreadful diet, cheap shop bought bread, cake, biscuits, fish and chips once a week, would sit and peel a satsuma and share it, no raw food, salad, fruit, fresh vegetables, tinned only, cheap meat,
nothing to give her vitality, mostly carbs, she was in the same situation as yourself, stiff and in pain.

Dietwise, try improving your energy levels, multivitamin with iron and zinc, vit C to aid absorption.

When MiL retired she sat a great deal, knitting, watching tv, drinking tea with biscuits, so after a couple of years she developed a pyramid shape, ballast, hence the difficulty rising from the sofa, then the stiffness moving.
My Gran always used a pouffe (remember those) to rest ner legs so ner feet would not swell and never had difficulty standing up

Also, you could try daily Magnesium, good for leg cramps, musculature, speak to someone knowledgeable in your local Health Store, if you are concerned as @Fraaahnces pointed out, a gp would lecture you about your weight without delving into cause and effect.

Pain where? How overweight are you? How old are you? There's no point ignoring that weight makes a big difference to mobility, and also muscle and balance loss as we age.

Worth seeing your GP to see if it is just that - then you know you have some choices to make. I say that as someone who fluctuates between 3 and 4 stone overweight myself, and I know the huge impact the top of that range has on my mobility and hip/knee pain. I am very very slowly but surely aiming to lose 2 stone now as it will massively help.

But also to rule out other factors. I developed pain, stiffness and an odd lean/lurch when I stood up and started walking (with the same sense that my body had stopped working) - it was a severe Vit D deficiency that needed prescribed mega-doses that turned it around in weeks.

3luckystars · 02/07/2024 22:20

I would definitely talk to the gp. Where is the pain, is it all day long?

PoonamiMammi · 02/07/2024 22:28

It is insane how much weight affects everything. Even if you get lectured it's good to have blood tests and a check up just in case.
If I were you I would try for a month to do some stretches, walk more and just some daily gentle exercises.. plenty free online. Then see if you notice improvement.
